Fencing- do it yourself o not

So here's the situation-

I want to make my fence higher so my dog can't get out. Currently, I have a 4 ft chain link fence. I want to make the fence at least 6 ft high, if not higher, becasue my dog is a freak and must be part kangaroo.

The things I can think to do are:

1.) Privacy fence it. But its expensive and I don't really want one, I like talking to my neighbor, and I have a vegetable garden right by the fence that needs the sun and it would be blocked by the fence in the AM, when it gets most of its sun now.

2) Sink some posts, and run some woven wire above the chainlink. This would let the light in, and I'd be able to talk to my neighbors, but it would look awful, w/ chain link on the bottom and the woven wire at top. But it would proably be less expensive, and easier, than doing a privacy fence.

3) Hire a fence builder and have them do it. I don't like this option because I have no money lying around, but I think I might get the homeowner to spring for it.

What is the best option? Or is there anything else that I didn't think of that would do the job?

Run a single wire on plastic posts and go to Lowes/Home Depot and get an electric fence charger. Hook it up and run it for a couple weeks. The dog will get the message and steer clear of the fence.

Iron fences look good, and if the posts are close enough together, your dog can't squeeze between them. And they come in 6 foot height. Unfortunately, though, it's about as expensive as a privacy fence.

another option are those buried cables that shock the dog when it gets close. There was another thread on them a while back...

It would be easier to just get a shorter dog.

You might want to consider a radio fence barrier. Do a search and you will find a few discussions about them on hornfans if that interests you. They are effective in most situations and certainly economical.

I have a radio fence. It worked for awhile, until my dog learned its dirty little secret... if she gets out it stops shoking her after 5 seconds. See my thread on quacks about that. She's decided the pain is worth it to go try to get hit by cars.

Nothing looks worse than a patched up fence that involves chainlink. Very Oklahoma.

I would consult with a pro, tell 'em what you need regarding the garden, and have them build it. At least the side where the garden is. You can build the rest. I've built a few fences and they are easy. The most physical part is digging the post holes then setting the post.

there's always the roll of concertina wire around the top of the fence for that "max security incarceration facility" look.

I had to do the extra 2 feet of hog fence on top of the chain link due to my climbing dog. We already had some honeysuckle in one area nd it is up to the top now and looks great. In another area I planted some star jasmine that will probably cover the Oklahoma look in another few months.

Go for the privacy fence, but mix in some lattice at about the four foot mark so you can still visit with the neighbor.
