Feeding 20 people

What's the most cost effective way to have a good meal for 20 people in a residence that doesn't include the hosts cooking?

Prices I've seen so far put Rudy's at about $9.00/person, Antonio's at $11.25/person, Pappasito's at $11.85/person and Serrano's at $13.50/person.

Anyone have any other ideas?

I'll second Pappasito's. They give you a lot of sides with your order. Really enough food to feed 25-30 people.

what do you get from Rudy's for $9 per person?

Fajitas or BBQ are definitely the easiest and best things to do for inexpensive and easy. Everytime I've had people over or been to peoples house BBQ is the clear winner as Fajitas are everyones old stand by. However if for $9 per person doesn't include sides I'd stick with Pappasitos.

Do you have any people who won't eat meat? if so you'll need to make sure to have something for them.

Rudy's comes with 1/2 lb meat per person, 3 side dishes, pickles, onion and japs, bread, sauce, Iced tea, ice and ice scoop,, cups, lemons, sugar, cutlery packs, plates, serving untensils and a tablecloth.

All the others are a mix of beef and chicken fajitas with all the fixings, but no drinks.

Anyone know of other restaurants that I can do more comparison shopping?

Hell- why not just buy HEB fajitas and cook them on the grill?
here's my HEP list for 20 people-
3- packages fresh pico de gallo $3.99 each
1- fresh salsa pouch $3.99
3- 20 pack tortillas 2 flour, 1 corn $2 each
4 cans black beans $.99 a can
6 pounds beef fajita- $3.49 a pound
5 pounds ckickent thigh fajita $1.49 a pound
4 pound package grated american/jack $6
two pack gaucamole $6

So for about $60+/- I have the group fed versus $200+ I understand the "i don't want to cook aspect" however you can do all this ahead of time and just toss the fajitas into the oven to warm them up IF you do NOT overcook them on the gril the night before. Everything else is just scooping stuff into containers, just like you will do with the take out food. Wrap the tortillas into several foil packages and wrap the fajitas into foil as well and warm up in the oven while you put out the spread- in 20 minutes you have a "no cook" spread that will feed all-

I might go buy a big thing of rice from the local tex mex place for another $10 to round out the meal.

Anyhow just my thoughts- but for me the little bit of labor of cooking the meat the night before offsets the savings for $140 in "free" booze... Plus the food will be better in all honesty.

Then I still spend most of the remaining money on killer some gran marnier and good tequila for margaritas.

Vic's bbq, 445-4250. Ask for Sylvia, she comes in at noon, but that's the rush, so call about 2 o'clock. Costs more than Rudy's (about 15 per for the 4 meat plate with all the trimmings and tea), but the food is head and shoulders over Rudy's. Spring for the cobbler. If you want it delivered to your place, give him a nice tip. He's a hell of a nice guy, and you will not be disappointed in the food. I have used his service about a dozen times and the crowd is always pleased.

20 people? Easy if you cook. Spaghetti and meatballs. All you need is sauce and prepared meatballs and a pot to heat them in. Plus spaghetti and a pot to cook it in. Garlic bread heated in the oven and a big salad from the fridge.

Sounds like he doesn't want to cook, although how can you go wrong with the Soeffer's Lasagna idea . . .

I'm having people (close to 20) over in June and didn't want to be stuck in the kitchen but I'm doing a little cooking. I'm going to put a couple HEB briskets in the oven, my mother is making potato salad the night before, and ordering Rice and beans for 20 from a local restaurant. I will still have to make guacamole or some kind of dip and buy drinks and plates and stuff but it is still cheaper than ordering from Rudy's. My mother already bought the briskets so I'll only be spending about 50-60 and it would've been a little over 100 if I would've bough the brisket myself.

The lasagna is a good idea too. Stick a couple in the oven. Buy the big bag of lettuce for salad. Buy a few loaves of french bread and you're done. You can dress it up if you like by adding things to the salad and buying the frozen bread but it's up to you.

If you would rather spend more and do absolutely nothing then I would do Rudy's.
