Favorite Tequila

I like to sip tequila at my wife's family ranch. I have tried numerous kinds, but my current favorite is Cazadores reposado. I typicaly like reposados more than anejos because they maintain the agave taste better.

What do you guys like?

I only drink tequila in margaritas, so I'm not about to drop any more than $50 on a bottle. That having been said, a new tequila called Tezon has recently edged out Patron in our house. It's distilled in Jalisco using traditional production methods, including the use of a volcanic millstone.

Mix 1.5 oz Tezon, 0.5 oz Cointreau, juice of one lime, a splash of orange juice, and shake with ice. Perfect.

if you are using it to mix, try something called hacienda de chihuahua blanco. technically it's "sotol" and not tequila, but it's made with agave and it's great.

I have drank a good bit of tequila, but I just don't enjoy it straight. I like it mixed in margarita's and mexican martinis (like above).

I love tequila straight. Most people just shoot it, which is understandable in a bar setting, but I much prefer to sip it with a small squeeze of a lime over ice.

If I'm not gonna go crazy on a high-end bottle, I'll stick with Herradura anejo. It's very smooth and available almost anywhere. I once bought a liter bottle on the Nicaragua-Costa Rica border for $12, which was an unbelievable deal.

I've only had Cabo Wabo once, and it was in margaritas, but it was pretty damn good as well.

I have a homemade tequila from Mexico that is the smoothest I've ever tasted. It's awesome for margaritas, straight and for shots. I've also found that taking shots with slice of orange is better than a slice of lime.

Tres Generocies (sp)

Gold or silver is really smooth for shots and it is around $35 per bottle.
I don't like it straight very often but even I can shoot this without a grimace. No lime needed either.

1942, Paradiso, and Herradura Selection Suprema are all amazing sipping tequilas, but they are all very expensive, especially Selection Suprema . Of the affordable ones I like Don Julio Anejo, El Tesora Anejo, and Corazon Anejo the best.

Has anybody tried JB Wagoner's Ultra-Premium 100% Blue Agave Spirits? It is an American tequila that can't use the name tequila

I agree with HORN itos-- Sauza-- nice price-- 2 shots on ice, lime juice, 1/2 shot of cointrieax and top glass off with grapefruit juice

I like it straight up as well-- but for the price it's like macallen or or low end Glen morangie scotch-- pretty good without a huge pricetag

earl77, im with you. cazadores reposado is the perfect tequila. its good straight and makes a fine margarita (pretty much anything does, but its not so expensive that i feel wasteful).

but one of my favorite drinks is cazadores with tonic and lime (or sprite/7up if you want). ive tried it with other tequilas and none of them turn out right, but this concoction is just amazing.

Corralejo and Revolucion. Both reposado and both have cool looking bottles. The Corralejo comes in tall blue or red bottles. The Revolucion comes in a clear bottle with two raised pistolas on the back.

In college when I was po, I drank Moctezume Gold.

But I would not recommend that to even my worst enemy.

mrmyke, though i don't often see it around town, i have spotted the paradiso at a few places in austin (iirc, iron cactus was one but i haven't really been to 6th street in ages). anyway, even at $15-20, it is worth trying once. they contracted a french cognac maker, so they age it like anejo, then for another period of time in used cognac barrels (about 5 years between the two). very good flavor.

I've tried 1942 once and it was great. I can't bring myself to buy a bottle that expensive, but I doubt I'd regret it if I ever break down and do it. In the meantime I've been drinking the cheaper Don Julios. Reposado and Anejo. Nothing special, but better than the typical rot-gut.

I just put a new stone patio in my backyard and it's been nice to sip a glass of tequila out there and enjoy the new surrondings in the good weather lately.

sotol and agave are two different plants. the hacienda is not tequila because mexico has a patent on the term "tequila", much like france has a patent on "champagne".

you guys are spending way too much money on tequila if youre mixing margaritas. imo, the topshelf margarita is a big scam. although theres a nice difference between triple sec and grand marnier or cointreau, there's not much point in buying a nice tequila when youre going to corrupt it with a bunch of crap. just like you dont mix bookers with coke, its for sipping, and these good tequilas are meant to be drank straight.

if you are mixing ritas, the reposados or silvers are best. the anejos make better sipping, imo.

I'll second porfidio's. one my buddies had some, it's great, but i can't find it. i know it's expensive but don't know how much since i can't find it

My all time favorites -- both long gone -- were Centinela Tres Anos and Las Trancas Reposada. These days I like Hacienda de Chihuahua Reposada. And yes, as has been mentioned, it is sotol, not tequilla. It is made from wild agave, rather than cultivated blue agave. And it is allsome.

Another Hornitos fan here, I just don't enjoy tequila enough to justify paying for anything more expensive. I frequent my local Twin Liquors enough, that I am pretty good friends with the guys that run it. For margaritas for a large group, they sell Puerto Vallarta tequila in a 1.75. It is made in South Africa, but is 100% Agave, this is what we throw in our margarita machine at tailgates.
