October is here and I'm in the mood to watch something scary. Can anyone suggest a good horror movie-- well-known or something I've never heard of?

the exorcist

a movie that was actually kind of scary was "the others" with nicole kidman. a lot scarier than i thought it would be.

1. The Exorcist
2. The Shining
3. The Thing

In that order.

1) Halloween I - break-away leader; then
2) Evil Dead I
3) Evil Dead II
4) Army of Darkness
5) 2003 TX-OU game.

I hear Event Horizon mentioned every year, I think it's about time I see that.

I nominate 28 Days Later. 28 Weeks Later isn't bad either.

The Phantasm series and the first two Hellraiser movies.
In keeping with the season we are pulling out all of the old Dracula movies both American and British (Hammer Studios).

Its actually the 3rd Exorcist you're talking about, and I agree this flick is very underrated. The nurse scene is very scary as is the scene where the patient is crawling on the ceiling like a roach.

Martyrs is a new French horror movie I saw at a movie festival. Unfortunately it won't be released on DVD in the USA until next year. But it was great. Freakin great. It has real good acting and a fresh story with a crazy twist at the end. I don't want to give away too much so I will show you a vague youtube trailer.

Sorry if that one's lame. You can check out the others on youtube if you want some of the movie revealed. When it was marketed to me I was told to hear nothing of it before watching it.

Inside is another French horror movie. It is different than American horror movies as well. I was really impressed upon first viewing until I bought it at Best Buy and watched it again, but it is still good. It has wonderful acting and a foreboding, dark, emotional atmosphere upon until the intense action begins. It is very very gory if you get the unrated version but I think Blockbuster has a heavily edited version. BTW it is basically a home invasion story where a pregnant woman is trapped in a house.

Some interesting choices, I've seen all but two of them.

Here's three that I liked.

Few movies make me jump and none make me scream.

But, these made me uneasy, caused me to think and unsettled my thoughts:

"Frailty"

"Fallen"

"The Minus Man"

The final fate of Naomi Watts in "Funny Games" also bothered me.

I thought these scary flicks were all fairly realistic, when compared with many creepy movies.

And plausible, more realistic, horror movies scare me more than gobs of gore or monsters jumping out at you.

Now that I think about it, these made me jump back in the day:

Both George A. Romero's often copied "Night of the Living Dead" and Don Siegel's original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" are still very scary to watch and contemplate, but (as far as I know) only imaginary.

I admit I occasionally jumped a lttle at these scary films, but I laughed some too.

And I never screamed.
