Favorite fruit

It's hard to choose what my favorite fruit is. Sometimes, it's hard to beat a perfect apple or perfect peach. But if you've never tasted a fresh mangosteen, you owe yourself a taste.

Mangosteens are fantastic (nothing like mango) and hard to describe. I would say the closest I can come to describing it is that it's a fragrant, tangy peach. Apparently, they're supposed to have some mythical health benefits but who cares. They're delicious.

in the summer, i eat melon every single day. with salt. mostly watermelon, but i eat cantaloupe about twice a week, honeydew maybe once every two weeks.

my bday is in august and i always ask for a watermelon instead of cake at the office. most people don't appreciate that.

its also hard to beat a big juicy red delicious. i like to go to central market or whole foods and buy 5 different kinds of apples --1 each -- and eat a different kind each day at work as my afternoon snack.

when cherries are in season its hard to beat them.

where do you find this mangosteen that you speak about?

When a piece of fruit is perfectly ripe, it almost doesn't matter what it is. I'd have to put watermelon near the top of my list, but only if it is a good one. A bad melon can make me avoid them for the rest of the season. I like bananas because they are the most consistent in that you can almost always find a good one, and they have many uses once they are beyond the "peel and eat" stage (smoothies, muffins, PB and banana sandwiches, etc).

I haven't tried a mangosteen. I'll have to look for them.

Peaches, strawberries, huge red delicious apples, or sunkist oranges.

I might have to round up some fruit i've never tried before and have a taste test tomorrow. Easy way to spend a summer day.

My folks had four peach trees. Three were worthless, maybe because they were new. The old one had, I think, freestone peaches and the dog house was under the tree. Best dam peaches I ever had, and a good peach is the best fruit. Kind of a slightly bitter taste, but still sweet. Homemade ice cream with those was ambrosia.

Not sure how much to attribute to the presence of the dog's house.

we may be getting mangosteens from Thailand soon Ajax.
They're working on some form of control to ensure no bugs cross over to the US. Read about it in NYtimes...but can't link it now since it's an older article.

Did some more reading on the mangosteen. Apparently, the part of the fruit that has tremendous health benefits is the rind (purple part). Yuck. The rind is nasty and bitter, and it stains your hands. The white fleshy part is delicious but I can't imagine eating the rind.

I grew up eating blackberries, apples, cherries and peaches in the summer from orchards around our house. Well, the blackberries were wild. Nothing quite like a piece of home made blackberry cobbler with some vanilla ice cream.

Fredericksburg peach, then in no particular order:

Fresh watermelon
Fresh strawberries
Fresh blueberries
Fresh nectarines
Fresh cantelope

I like bananas, apples and oranges, but I get a bit tired of them by winter's end.

I have to be in the right mood for island fruit (pinapple, mangos, papayas, etc.).

Got turned onto those Saturn/Donut peaches. Can't stop eating them, and those black apricots.

I tried a mangosteen the other day. Really tasty.
