Hi everyone, I'm sorry if I'm not posting this in the correct forum. I just bought my plane ticket to come to Austin for the game on August 30th and I was wondering if anyone can give me some insight on where to stay, hotel wise. Where is the better place to stay closer to the stadium or closer to downtown? Thanks in advance for your help

Welcome JabFAU. I suspect you will get a few comical replies here as well, but I'll give you an honest answer. Since there are not that many hotel choices near campus, you will probably want someplace downtown. However, there are a few places near campus, so don't rule the area out. Either way, you can walk to the stadium from downtown, so I don't think it will make much difference. And I do think you will want to check out the nightlife downtown.

Thanks for your honest answer. We will definitely check out the nightlife. We will be flying in Thursday night and flying out Sunday afternoon.

Yeah i agree, stay closer to downtown. Many hotes to stay at in downtown from avg to very nice depending on what you are looking for. It will be less than $10 cab ride to the stadium or you can walk it if you want. More to do/see/eat in downtown. You might want to spend some time before or after walking around the camups b/c it is a very beautiful campus. Hope u have a great time.

how much are you looking to spend per night to stay? the $$ varies greatly depending on where you stay in Austin.

Nothing to fancy but probably anywhere from $75-$120.00 a night.

Thanks for everyone's help so far, much appreciated and I'm looking forward to the trip.

We don't have an on campus stadium yet so it will be fun just being there and seeing what it's like at a school that has a lot of tradition

Jab, I further recommend something downtown. I think the La Quinta (12th and San Jacinto, I think) is fairly priced. It is not fancy but it is close to Sixth Street and the party areas, right across the road from the Capital and walking distance or a quick bus (one dollar) to the stadium/campus area.

It is near a hub for city buses in case you want to use it to get around during the day. The Capital is an impressive tour and interesting to a variety of age groups.

The stadium sits at 23d and Trinity (which merges with San Jacinto at MLK or 19th Street). On gameday the tailgates start about 15th or 16th street on many streets. So you see, you are not far at all from anything day or night.

It is a paper that lists goings on. There will be more live music in one place than you may have ever experienced. It may be frustrating that you have to choose and miss things. Tons of clubs, bars of all types. Great restaurants.

This forum, Around Austin, will prove helpful to find and ask things. Threads tend to last longer here as well. Good luck and hope you have a great time in Austin. Not too much on game day, however.

im not up to date on the price of hotel rooms DT, but im pretty sure you need to be willing to pay more to stay there.

btw:
wow you can post in this forum guess you can always learn something new?? i always thought this was where the austin area ideas go after the thread has died kind of like classics... hence under the category "archives"

Definitely 2nd (or 3rd) the La Quinta downtown. I have stayed there often. It is hard to beat that location and the price is usually around $100/night. I actually prefer some of the B&Bs in Austin, and many of them are not far from campus or downtown, but you will need a rental car. Have a great visit. Wish I could make there myself.

Get up early Sunday morning, and before you check out, take a cab to Angie's on 7th for breakfast. Great migas, and they make their own corn tortillas. The back to the hotel to check out and catch your shuttle or cab to the airport.

I would also suggest booking a hotel as quickly as possible, because it will become quite difficult to find a hotel downtown as August 30 approaches.

FYI, I went to La Quinta's website, and that hotel is charging 135/night. Probably as good as you are going to get for a decent hotel with that location on a game weekend.

On expedia, you can get the Days Inn, Rodeway (which are close to campus) or the Super 8 (around 12th and I 35, near downtown), for 80-90 bucks a night, but I'd spend the extra for the La Quinta.

The Days Inn over by 32nd street can be sketchy. I know a person who worked there and it is standard practice as dictated by the owner to give rooms away before the deadline with or without reservation. When they do this the clerks are supposed to say they are sorry, etc....

I would trust La Quinta more. Besides, the location for that is better than the Rodeway or Days Inn. It gets them close to sights and goings on as well as not being too far from the game.

BOOK NOW as others suggested. Prices won't come down and no, there will not be a last minute fire sale on rooms so don't try to go the Priceline way. Our stadium will be even larger than past years so if there was ever a few stray rooms, they will be long gone.

fwiw, i got the driskill for $85 on priceline for last years first game. none of the downtown 4-star hotels were full that weekend.

i would get a refundable reservation at lq and then priceline downtown 4* a few days before you arrive. you should get a decent deal, as you are staying for thurs/fri night as well.
