I couldn't agree with you more. The characterization of the government is not always indicative of its citizens.
Leaders make the choices that countries become known by. and usually they make these choices out of personal interest and not community (country) consensus.
It's obvious that there is a large contingent in most of the Muslim countries that does want more democracy, more modernity, more capitalism, more education etc.
We've never had more examples than we have right now.
When's the last time most Americans risked death to secure or protect democracy. Heck we can't even get most of their fat butts to get off the couch long enough to read a paper and go vote.
Men and women in Syria, Egypt, Tunisia, Lybia, Iraq, Afghanistan and others risk being jailed, tortured, and killed for pursuing more. and yet they do.
