That is so bizarre and tragic. I know a guy that used to have the seats in the corner next to the guy that fell tonight. One of the ironies is this guy was a fireman and so was the guy that fell from the upper deck last year but amazingly survived.
I know this is not about the athletes, but I still have to wonder how this affects Josh Hamilton.
It's got to affect him tremendously. It affected me, listening to Eric Nadel, driving back from the Y after a swim. I heard this collective gasp from the crowd, wasn't really listening to Nadel call the play, and thought it was a reaction to a line foul into the crowd, which usually is no big deal. Then there was like a 3-second pause, and Nadel commented that some dude had fallen from the outfield stands. I immediately thought of last year's incident, but didn't think anything of it until I checked ESPN tonight. I heard the reaction to a guy dying tonight. Can't imagine what it's like for Josh to SEE it, or the fans in the outfield. It'd traumatize me.
From what I heard, he was conscience after the fall and was talking to somebody about caring for his son who was alone in the stands. He apparently had a heart attack on the way to the hospital. I just assumed he died due to massive head injuries from the fall. But I'm no doctor.
The Brownwood Fire Department is in the process of establishing a fund for donations in the fireman's name for his family. I intend to make a donation.
AFter the fall, the Oakland bullpen staff heard him asking someone to check on his little boy in the stands, that his little boy was up there all alone.
Tragic, tragic thing. My heart aches for the family and for Josh.
Horrible horrible tragedy. It was compounded by the fact that his son sat there and watched his dad die. May God comfort that little man and his family.
Unbelievably sad and tragic event. Now that I am a father this kind of story just hits me much harder. Had to go give him a big hug and a kiss after I saw this.
My thoughts are with his son he had to witness the entire event. The fact that he was left alone in the stands and then had to ride in the ambulance with his dad to the hospital just hurts my heart. I want to always be there for my son and in this event the dad was there with him and this freak accident occurred.
You can tell from reading the stories how close the father and son were. His last thoughts were of his son alone in the stands. I certainly will be hard on Hamilton as well perhaps feeling somewhat responible for the throw that did not make it all the way to the stands. I have no doubt he will reach out to the kid in the stands and look after him from here on in.
