Gamefly is delivering it today, so I haven't played it yet. Reviews have been great, but that doesn't always mean much.
What I get out of the reviews..
Its Oblivion with Guns, more traditional "Level upping" , better story, fallout look and feel, and a lot of additions that help game play. Oblivion was a good game, so improving on that makes me optimistic.
My take on it after spending some time with it last night.
I have the PC version and have everything on graphics maxed out.
The graphics still look muggy, maybe I'm spoiled with other games but the graphics make it seem like an obvious 360 port and I was unimpressed with them. From a distance things look good but up close most things look like an oil painting, i.e. the detail just isn't there.
The game crashes and the sentiment is shared by all PC owners it seems. I believe it's due to an error in coding resulting in a memory leak, waiting for a patch on this one.
I noticed a few glitches, a lot of it has to do with people interacting with each other and then immediately shift focus to you and start talking to you in the middle of their previous conversation with someone else if you come near them. That is a little off-putting.
That being said I'm anxious to keep exploring the rest of the game and will report back with what I find. I will say that so far the sound is great. The ambient sound and a lot of the creatures sound great. The voice acting is pretty solid all around from what I have experienced thus far.
Played some more yesterday. I have to say that the visuals almost seemed like they were better in this second play through. Maybe I've become accustomed to what I'm seeing or maybe the vault was the first place designed and so it wasn't crafted in as much detail as the other locations (although I do not feel that is the case) regardless, I don't feel as though the visuals were as bad as I initially thought.
I found myself staying up until past 3 in the morning playing. There is just something about the game that kind of hooks you. I think it's just the location itself. I believe Bethesda really captured the feel of the wasteland. My only gripe about that is that everything is so close to each other that it doesn't feel like a wasteland. I understand why they did it (who wants to walk for 20 minutes in real time if you can't use fast travel) I just wish there was another way around it. An abandoned school was captured expertly Bethesda's artists and design team.
What I do feel is lacking though is the atmosphere. It's there but it feels very painted as black and white with good and evil. It doesn't really feel that there are shades of gray in your choices. You're either a savior, and bastard or you don't care. I wish it was a bit more complex than that, the Witcher is a game that did this very well as well as Fallout 1 and 2.
I have to say though I went from being kind of disgruntled with it to being rather pleased with the game. The wasteland, what I've seen of it thus far is simply magnificent. There are a few things I don't like and some I do in regards to locations I come across but everyone will have their opinion about those. I've played for over 10 hours easily and that includes doing side quests and what not and I would say I'm only on the second part of the main quest. Not to spoil it but it's where you leave Megaton to find your dad.
What excites me most about this game is the potential it still has for the modding community to take hold of it. Bethesda needs new writers for dialogue, period. There are a few atrocious lines in there and some of the characters talking animations (well most really) don't come off as fluid as they should. I am very excited to see what the modding community does with this and if Bethesda will release their SDK tools.
Played a lot more and still only completed the next step of the main storyline quest. I really enjoy exploring the entire wasteland area. I can't stress enough how well of a job Bethesda did creating the area. It is phenomenal.
I'm still having random performance issues. I stopped the other night because in the middle of the game i got these vertical lines spaced closely together on my screen. It looked like it was interlaced video.
Bugs are getting annoying with the AI pathfinding. I wish Bethesda took the time to iron out that sort of thing and some of the emotion of NPCs doesn't come off as it should.
For instance, if someone that is close to another NPC was just killed you would think that said NPC would have a little bit more emotion about the situation and then maybe much later after you talk to them they are a little bit more accepting of the fact. Not giving off an oh well **** it that sucks too bad emotion.
I've explored quite a bit of stuff to the north of Megaton and the immediate area surrounding it along with part of the D.C. area. I've started heading west to explore that area currently. I'll come back with more opinions and my take on the game.
I kind of like the repair system and the making your own weapons but I feel this area could have potentially been fleshed out and made a real enjoyment. As it stands now it's there and it's mildly neat but it seems like it has the potential to be phenomenal.
That really seems to be what I've noticed with this game so far. It's not too bad in its own right and it has a load of potential. I am really anxious to see if any dedicated modders out there will take that potential and turn it into something great.
So this game is huge. I've spent a ton of time on it and it's just huge. A lot of people will say this is Oblivion with Guns and others will say it's not.
It's not. What it does similar to Oblivion is the fast travel and the compass. The compass is the most similar thing to Oblivion. I have Oblivion (and hate it) and this simply isn't Oblivion. The quick travel prevalent in Fallout 3 is a necessity. I think people forget that there was "quick travel" in the previous Fallouts however that was to get from location to location.
Fallout 3 has an ever-present (correct word?) map which is the Wasteland. The locations dot this and while it would be nice to actually show the time and the path taken by your character when you use quick travel it still amounts to the same thing. In Fallout 3 this is a necessity because who wants to walk from one end of the map and have to make use of all the subway tunnels in D.C. proper? People would be bitching about not having a quick travel system.
Now D.C. is too big to be represented all at once in the Wasteland like the area outside of it is. This is why you can only go to large sections of D.C. at a time and you have to use the subway tunnels. It is slightly annoying, it seems way to similar to Hellgate London. That being said, once you make it to the location you need to be at once you can skip the subways so that's a plus.
A minor annoyance is your "flashlight." It's cool that it's the pipboy but it sucks that it kind of just illuminates your feet. Some places are impossibly hard to see in.
This game will suck you in, there's no doubt about that. With so many locations and things to see just exploring the wasteland is a lot of fun. They did a pretty good job giving each location it's own feel but there's a few places that are semi large that you can explore for an hour and not find anything substantial. Like it was put there to take up space.
For instance I stumbled upon Vault 106 and not to give anything away it was kind of a scary experience. However I need 100 science to check out a computer terminal and in doing so I'm assuming I'll learn something about what's going on. Other than that, after exploring the entire vault, I could find nothing else in it that told me anything about it or started any quests. I think there are a few more places like that but only more time spent in the game will tell.
On that note, I can recall running into several areas that require me to have a key or a 100 in lockpick or science which I didn't have at the time. Now I can't recall where all those areas were so it sometimes feels like I'm going to be missing some things if I don't come back. I think there is a way to set notes in the map but I haven't tried yet.
I finally picked up a follower other than Dogmeat and they easily hold their own so at least they don't suck like some of the ones did in the early Fallouts (I'm looking at you IAN).
Anyone else still playing this? I just got it and I am loving it, even though parts of it scare the crap out of me. Any suggestions on some cool quests or places to check out?
Try the Dunwich Building early in the game - it'll be more fun. Also, if you encounter Casey Smith's garage early in your wanderings, don't explore that - not to give too much away, but you can miss a good part of the main story if you do that. Wait until you've played for quite a while.
I'm still playing it. Have put in 51 hours so far with just one character. There is so much stuff in this game. Don't worry about doing everything just right at the beginning, just explore and have fun. Just remember to keep an eye out for bobble heads. There is one in Vault 101.
Stockpile Pre-war books and Nuka Cola Quantum for later missions.
Oh... This is very very very important to your sanity. Say it with me, "There are no robots." Repeat 10 times. You may not understand now... but you will... you will.
