Apparently it is cap related. The inference in the article is that the Falcons want to "provide flexibility in the free agent market", which I assume means having more money to spend on more pressing needs.
Somebody will get themselves a good TE and a talent like Crumpler certainly deserves to escape the clusterfuck that is Atlanta.
He had a high cap number, isn't much of a blocker (which is what Atlanta is going to want more of from a #1 TE) and never looked 100 percent after offseason knee surgery. It's a wonder he's held up health wise throughout his career because that was a knock on him coming out of college.
The Falcons are going to majorly overhaul the roster. There could be more cuts upcoming.
1) Sign Crumpler (provided he's getting around to fully recovered from his injury)
2) Sign Bernard Berrian
3) Draft Sweed
4) Call up Marino and have him send 6 months of NutriSystem to Lendale White's house
Mix, bake during training camp and voila - a credible offense for your franchise QB!
Crumpler played for Mack at UNC. Works his *** off. Good guy (outside of one incident that was probably a result of him being fed up with Petrino). If his knee and other injuries recover, he will be a good pickup. Problem is he made more money than all but two TEs in the league....and those two were named Gonzalez or Gates.
Crumpler still has a little left in the tank, but not much, his injury problems have been pretty bad the last 2 years. It was a good move by the Falcons to release him and start over.
I read somewhere that they had something between $20-25 milllion to spend on free agents. Also read they were looking hard at Jaamal Charles for one of their two 2nd round picks, if they don't go with McFadden in the 1st round. I am sure Blaylock would like to block for either of those backs.
