Fairway Wood vs Hybrid

Trying to decide between a 3 wood (15 deg) a 5 wood (18 deg) and a 2 Hybrid (16 deg). I need something in between my driver 275ish and my 19 degree 3 Hybrid (200 yard). Any advice?

Oh and I got a Odyssey sabertooth putter. Awesome so far.

All I know is that my sonartec 4 wood is a weapon. i'd never heard of the brand, but the guy at golfsmith took me straight to it, even though it was not the most expensive thing in the store.

Is that Sonartec a fairway wood or hybrid? I think chitwood uses a Sonartec as a hybrid and liked it. It's a good brand but not a lot of hype like the other brands.

so many factors but imho
high handicap-hybrid
low handicap more towards wood
although i'm seeing more and more hybrid everywhere

sounds like to me you are in the market for a club that bridges the gap between your 200 yard club and your driver. that is pretty much a 3 wood (15 degree) unless you want a stronger 3 wood (13 degree). i'd go to the store and check em out and see what fits your eye best.

go with the 3 wood. By the way, I spaced on my 4 hybrid, it's not a Sonartec, it is a Nickent--another not big name brand, but came recommended from a few different people.

I'm a beginning to intermediate level golfer and I've had 2 hybrids for about 6 months now and couldn't quite figure them out until the other day.

I would almost always hit the hybrids to the right. I wouldn't slice it, I'd just hit it that direction and I don't know why. So, I shelved them and worked at my irons.

After getting my long and mid iron game down, I tried the hybrids again this past week. They work much better now but I noticed they still went a bit to the right unless I hit the ball as hard as I possibly can. Then it goes straight and far, too. No other club is like that for me.

I have a 3 hybrid (19 degree) and a 5 hybrid (28 degree). I can hit the 3 about 200-215 and the 5 about 170-180. (For a point of reference, I hit a 7 iron 150.)

That's my .02 but I don't use my 3W or 5W much from the fairway. Maybe a previous poster said it best about the high handicappers being better with hybrids and the low handicappers being better with a fairway wood.

Don't get me wrong, I love my 19 degree and 22 degree hybrid, but for the gap you have, you should be good with the 3 wood. Don't go with the 5 wood. Ultimately, try out the 3W and the 2Hybrid from both the tee and fairway and see which you like.

I need to hit the 2H. I think that might be my solution. Thanks for all the responses. Chitwood, Nickent is a good brand, the hybrid got gold on Golf Digest review.

Because when you swing harder you're actually swinging fast enough for the flex. It's snapping back before contact and closing the face.

If you swing too slow for a shaft there's not enough whip at the bottom of the downswing to make it flex back and the face is left open at contact.

Too soft a flex = pulls and too stiff = pushes.

You'd think the faster one swings, the more the shaft flexes.

How does a faster swing make the shaft "snap back?"

For what it's worth, my driver is a Cleveland HiBore 8.5 with a stiff flex. I had a regular flex but couldn't keep from slicing it. I traded it in for a lower loft and a stiffer shaft.

My hybrids are Clevelands too, but they're both regular flexes. That may be better because the shaft is shorter so it's not supposed to be as flexible. Hell, I don't know. I just know I'm hitting it straight right now with the driver and the two hybrids despite the difference in shaft.

i also use stiff shafts in my driver and 3 wood but regular on everything else. it works for me too for some reason. hornimal's logic and graphic makes me think though. my swing speed is right on borderline for regular and stiff (appx 95mph) so it might not matter for me.

And a few will understate the flex. I reshafted a Callaway driver to one vendors stiff flex from the stock shaft (also stiff) and could do squat. Researching on the web revealed that I should have gone from the stock stiff to the vendors regular.

Here is my best advice. If you hit the 3 Hybrid well, get a 2 Hybrid. If you don't like your 3 Hybrid, get a 3 wood and replace your 3 Hybrid with a 5 wood.
