I wonder who posted that

.

The facts are partially, but not entirely correct, so let me clarify.

As everyone is aware, the Horns made 9 consecutive Sweet 16's (final year of the AIAW and 8 years of NCAA play), including 8 Elite 8's, 3 FF's and two championship game appearances (AIAW Runner-up in 1981-82 and undefeated NCAA Championship season in 1985-86). That streak ended at the beginning of the 90's, or 20 years ago. Since then we've had three Sweet 16 appearances; and yes, they were consecutive, but I don't know why that's referred to as 'misleading.' Three in 20 years is the same whether they were in succession or several years apart (well, actually I do know why it was called misleading. That happens when your motive is something other than just presenting the facts). And as far as losing seasons go, we did not have more that we did Sweet 16's. JC had three losing seasons spaced throughout her final 12 years at the helm, and made the same number of Sweet 16's. Three of each to be exact, not a big difference perhaps, but doesn't create quite the same impact as saying we had more of one than the other - and we all know that's exactly what the poster had in mind. And why even bring up JC or her career at all? I think we all know the answer to that question. So in response I would say...FACT. Under Conradt Texas made three Sweet 16's and a Final Four during her final 15 years at the helm, and was named Coach of the year twice duirng that same stretch. She also had three losing seasons (JC, not Gail), including her last, which she said was unacceptable. She retired. End of story. Gail has been at the helm just under five years and has made four consecutive NCAA tournaments at average of 21 wins per season. And, obviously, has never had a losing season at Texas. She has lost in the first round of NCAA play three times and made the second round once. Those are the facts. Did anyone not know any of that already? Um, no. But then again, that isn't why the post was made, now was it?

And can I just add.....

Why would someone make a post that started with the premise..."In the last 20 years..."? Why not start with the last 10 years? Wouldn't that be more relevant? But it wouldn't serve the poster's agenda to say we'd had three Sweet 16's, a Final Four, a Wade Trophy winner and two national coach of the year honors, and just one losing season in the past decade. Or, if you're going to go back 20 years, why not 30? That really wouldn't work, would it? Way too many Sweet 16's, Elite 8's, FF's and a NC - certainly can't include those. Or why lump JC's last 15 with Gail's first five? You're including only part of the former's era at the helm, and obviously the years she wasn't as successful. It's called picking whatever random date, or timeframe that suits a certain someone's agenda. And then use words like EVEN and MISLEADING to make a point when clearly that isn't the case, or say there were MORE losing seasons than Sweet 16's when that isn't true either.

Now ask yourself why someone would go to such lengths to post this kind of stuff on forums far and wide? It's called living in the gutter, and trying to go about things the wrong way because it's so much easier than doing them the right way.

If I wasn't a TEXAS fan, but maybe the fan of a team that is a rival for recruits, I might want to spread far and wide the thought that the Longhorns are "has beens" with no hope of any better performance for the future. When asked why I'm not being very supportive of the TEXAS team, I would protest loudly that anyone who really cares about the team would want to call attention to the problem so that it can be corrected. I'd have to say how caring I am over and over again in order to meet my need to keep recruits from looking at TEXAS serviously. And I'd have to say how oblivious the fans who aren't criticising the team are being. I'd probably say that one A LOT.

You know what I would say a lot? I would say, as a fan, you don't give up on your team. Until this season is over the number of winning seasons, tournament appearances, Sweet 16s, Elite 8s, Final Four's and National Championships is undetermined. Period. At the end of this season, feel free to pile on until the next one begins. Until then, you are not really a fan anymore. You are exactly the opposite.

And I find it hilarious that you think postings like the one above on various fan sites gets the attention of anyone with the power to decide who is our coach and when s/he will leave. It does, however, tell young girls thinking about Texas that we have some "fans" who no longer support the program. I guess self-fulfilling prophecy is part of your plan as well.

I read Hoopscoop and didn't read that one post, in a long series of posts, as being negative towards Gail or Jody. It should be read in the context of the entire conversation. In fact, I think that post was trying to provide some context about Texas' history and asking people to look beyond Gail's 5 years. But maybe that's just my interpretation.
