I am DONE with them. Any one use any other phone company (in Austin)?

We switched to the MCI neighborhood package and love it. They buy the lines from SWB and then charge you a flat rate for all local and long distance calls in Texas. Our LD bill used to fluctuate any where from $70 - $100 and now we pay a flat ~$58.00 a month. 95% of our LD calls are in Texas, so it works out nicely for us.

Thanks! I'll check it out

avoid AT&T , they are even worse (if you can believe that). I cancelled "call notes" with them ever month, only to find it back on my bill the next month.

SBC is nauseatingly awful, cut off my phone line for 4 days and keep charging me for reconnecting.
puke. i just want to keep my same phone number, so i am sticking with it.

Cut the phone cord and go with VoiP. This is phone service over the intenet and is without question the future of telecom in the country. Caveat: you must have a high speed internet connection (in Austin, go with Time Warner RoadRunner). With VoiP, you will connect your internet connection to a small modem and then plug any phone into that modem. Quality is perfect; advance features are unbelieveable; and price is awesome (if you already pay for the high speed internet connection). In Austin, AT&T has a residential VoiP offer/special. Check out the AT&T website and read more about it.

I would go VoIP but I fax a lot from home. It allegedly has issues with sending faxes. I also have an alarm that needs monitoring, and I don't like the idea of running cords all over the house to my cable modem...but damn, it's a great deal for those who can do it! Vonage is only $20 a month for unlimited nationwide, and they even e-mail you .mp3's of your voice mails!
