eyeglasses

Well after years of being in denial, i think DPS is going to make me get eyeglasses if i want a Texas driver license.

Thankfully my insurance covers a small portion of the costs.

Any recommendations where to go/start? I consider myself a pretty understated, yet stylish guy. Do i start with theLenscrafters/Pearle Visions of the world? Their ubiquity makes me wonder if my choices would be either too bland or too garish.

My vanity is very important.

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

You can get decent glasses at either of those places, as well as Sam's & Walmart. If you watch for a buy one-get one deal, you can get a pair of sunglasses, too. A friend got a pair of bifocals at Santa Fe Optical and they were almost $900, so you might avoid them.

RE: Rx sunglasses -

From experience, if you are unfortunate to have your DL checked by a cop(w/ a corrective lens restriction), you run the risk of a sure ticket.
Depends on if you get a real buckaroo or not.
-No correction in sunglasses, he may not even check them, then you're faced with arguing with him... could be good, could be bad.
-w/ correction... same thing, I guess.

(saving the details) I made a point of going to traffic court to contest. Just a hassle, thats all... the ticket was dismissed.
So, heads up, think about a 2nd pair, that is, if you wear sunglasses in the car.

There's more to glasses than cosmetics. I tried Lens Crafters once and they screwed up the pupilary distance. I didn't even know there was such a thing as pupilary distance, but if it's screwed up, you are also screwed up. I'd say get a good prescription from a real doctor, then don't be afraid to ***** if things don't seem right once you've had the lenses made. I've had to get lenses replaced 3 times before they got it right. It's not as easy as you might think.

Go to Santa Fe Optical or wherever and find some frames you really like. Note the make, model and size. Then go on ebay and buy the frames for 25% of retail list or less. Then take the frames into a discount place covered by your insurance and have them put the lenses in.

I have some minor distance vision issues but haven't regularly worn glasses for several years--the DPS woman gave me a pass last year but I'm pretty sure I wouldve failed if she hadn't given me some hints. Anyway, I went to Costco and got my vision test (make an appt.) for $70 and picked out a pair of stylish yet understated frames inside the store. They had a few good options that had random crap on the sides (Armani or Timberland or Converse logos/designs) but they had some that were simple. Frames were $70 and total price for the glasses was $140. Cheaper than Santa Fe (I bought glasses there once before but lost them) but I'm not sure how they compare to other places.

Another vote for zenni optical ... make sure the optometrist or his/her minion measures and writes the pupilary distance (PD) on your prescription.
