Eye glasses

I have been wearing glasses for about a year now for work (computer and projection screens only) and don't need them for normal reading or driving.

I want to get a second pair but the whole retail thing seems like a racket to me. Where can I find the best deal on eye glasses in the Austin area?

Also what do you guys recommend for prescription sunglasses. I don't need them, but might like the option. My optometrist had some with a magnetic clip on over regular frames. Any comments?

Surgery isn't an option at this time and except for a mild astigmatism in my left eye my vision is still pretty good.

Best deal locally is probably Costco, although the frame selection is limited. There are also many on-line sources, but I've never tried them. For Rx sunglasses I get a separate pair that provides some side protection rather than clip-ons--definitely helps. Also, I get polaroid lenses to reduce glare.

TexasEd,

Be careful with those magnetic clip sunglasses.

I've had the magnetic clip sunglass and was able to replace it several years ago when I lost it.

This weekend I went to LC--they have a 50% off (the lenses only) coupon on the website--to buy a new pair of glasses and wanted to buy the magnetic clip ons and they told me that if I lost the clip on I would have to buy a new frame as well.

Went to PearleVision afterwards and was told the same thing, except that the Rayban clip-ons could be replaced without having to buy the frame. Also, they had a 30% discount on the frames and lenses.

On a related note, does anyone use the Transition lenses that turn into subglasses when you are in the sun. I am looking into these and see the one draw back as they apparently do not turn into sunglasses in the car. They are supposed to come out with some new ones that do, but not sure when that is.

I ask because I just cannot go with the clip ons. Too much stuff to keep up with - glasses, clip ons, glasses case, etc. Rather have one pair with everything for glasses, sunglasses, etc.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Michtex,
30% off frames and lenses sounds > than 50% off lenses.

I think I get free lenses and $100 towards frames this year on my vision plan so I'll try out the second deal.

When I wore glasses I found some designer frames at my doctor's office (which were obviously overpriced) that I liked and then ordered the same ones online for half the price. I would recommend buying online, if you are able to try them on in person first.
