Eye Care / Glasses suggestions.

Next week I am going in for an eye exam that is long, long overdue. I am certain I will need glasses or contact lenses. I have no problem with that but our company insurance does not cover optical as of January! Great timing on my behalf as I have put this of for a long time with no real reason.

My first thought is Lenscrafters as they are the name that you see. That does not mean they are best or even good, or does it?

Sam's Club, Wal Mart, a local company? How do they stack up to the places like Lenscrafters in price, quality and service?

I know where they get you is frame and lens. What is your experience or suggestion on a good place to become 4 eyes again? I don't think I want contacts in the future and for sure not now. I am not ready to poke at my eye.

loop, walmart, sams, costco, lenscrafters, etc are all the same IMHO.

You are going to see a licensed OD who will charge you about 80 bucks. Lenscrafters will be closer to 120 bucks for the same exam.

After that, it's a matter of finding frames that you like. When you buy lenses, expect a hard upsell regardless of where you go. Scratch-resistant coating, etc. [jerry lundergard] well, the thing is...they put that true-coat on at the factory [/jerry lundergard]

Costco, IIRC, offers insurance for any damage that you do.

in all likelyhood, you won't have any complications that require any level of expertise. If you do, you need to see an opthomologist anyway.

Yeesh, that is a whole lot of sources in one place to look at. Good thing my eyesight is not getting bad! j/k, thanks.

BW, good info on the cost of the Doc. I will for sure check into a place lower for the exam than LC unless they have a special. I notice that AAA members get 30 percent off at LC which may come in handy in getting frames and lenses. That may be better than the half off lenses offer they have.

At least nobody, so far, has harshed on LensCrafters right off the bat.

I'm sure all Walmart doctors are different, but I recommend staying away from eye exams at Walmart. I had one there as an emergency because all the other doctors in the area were booked and I got my contacts back and they were the wrong prescription! I've never had a problem like that in 15 years of wearing contacts.

Sam's Club glasses, on the other hand, are a great deal. You don't even have to be a member to go to the eye center, just tell the person at the front.

Umm, I think LITNIN was trying to get you here:

ZENNI

Someone has capitalized on making a website off of a common misspelling.

Once you get your prescription for lenses, come back to this website to order your glasses. Very popular in the website deal community.

As someone who has worn glasses and/or contacts since age 10, I recommend that you DO NOT get your glasses at a budget place or online.

Fitting a pair of glasses is more than just picking out a frame that you like and looks good on you. The oculist should also measure the width of the bridge of your nose for proper fit, and also the length from the bridge of your nose to the back of your ear, to make sure you are getting temple pieces of the proper length. He or she should also measure the width from pupil to pupil, to make sure your eyes line up with the lens in the glasses for the best resolution.

I've bought budget glasses before and I was really, really sorry. Pay the extra money to a real oculist to make sure you are getting a true fit from someone who really knows what they are doing. You don't want to be fitted by a little teenaged chippy at Walmart who says, "Oh, those look really cute on you!"

Texanne is exactly right. Fitting glasses properly is important to how well they perform. I suspect this is especially true for progressive lenses which have relatively narrow optical sweet spots.

Dallas...the first tab on the link I provided goes directly to the Zenni site...I like having the other options.

Texanne...I don't necessarily disagree with your reluctance. I've worn glasses for forty plus years...progressive lenses for about the last twenty. My first three pair ran me between $450.00 and $600.00. A couple of years ago, I got tired of losing clip ons and not having a back up. I heard about Zenni and thought it was worth a shot. I have ordered three pair of glasses from them, and have not had issues, at all. The cost of the three combined(all progressive lenses) was cheaper than a single pair I purchased in the past.

Good stuff and thanks all.

What I may be able to do is actually try on some frames at a shop and see the fit and feel of them. Then I could order them online at a savings. I would not do this if I want to a local store but I also know they have some wiggle room on their price. Maybe they would negotiate a deal of some sort?

Again, thank you because there is some great info which has helped me quite a bit.
