Expensive Suits?

For the dapper types.

Is a $1000 Brooks Brother's suit twice the quality of say a suit purchased at Dillards? Looks like I have not done a good job of refreshing the business suits over the years and I am now in the market for at least a couple.

The last two I bought from Dilliards did not hold up to well and had a odd fit even after being tailored. Do the expensive suits hold up better or is just more expensive materials.

Any recommendations on Austin mens stores would also be helpful. Thanks

If you are willing to spend $1000 on a suit go get one that is semi- custom made by Hickey Freeman from the Texas Clothier.

You can also go see Gassane. He does a nice job even though his "custom" suits are outsourced to some guy in NYC. Service there will be great and should be able to meet your budget.

You will receive your suits in 6-12 weeks. Usually takes 10 to get mine in.

Look for at least Super 100s but Super 120s if you can.

That is the problem with cheap suits is that they look like **** sooner than a better suit will. Also, a nicer suit will drape across your body and shoulders better.

I can stand in a room with 10 guys in cheap suits and 3 in nicer suits and pick out the better suits simply b/c the nicer ones will fit better.

As a counterpoint I don't like the cut of Hickey Freeman, but to each their own. GB is right, the most important thing is the fit, or the combination of cut and fit, with the material a close second.

I've got a unique, ideal build, like the God Apollo. So an off the rack suit is almost not an option for me because my waist is so much narrower than my shoulders, but my thighs and hips are very strong and muscular.

So what I do is go to Last Call, buy a suit that's too large made of material I like (usually silk/wool blend), with lapels I like. Then I take this suit to a custom tailor, who basically takes it apart and puts it back together to my perfect size.

Depends on your body style. The Italian ones fit me well (Armani, Brioni, Zegna), and can be found in that price range at a Off Saks 5th Ave or the Neiman's Last Call outlets. I'd go for any top designer before I would a Brooks Brothers at that price. In Austin, the Last Call is at Brodie Oaks.

Sorry for the semi threadjack, but does anyone have a recommendation on a place to get a quality suit in Dallas/Plano for ~$1000? I'm sure there are a couple of local men's stores around that will allow me to do better than Brooks Brothers/Neiman Marcus/etc.

HHH - same recommendation as above - go to Off 5th Saks at Grapevine Mills and Nieman's Off the Rack at Preston/Plano Parkway (might have them reversed)

Armani, zegna, good hickey freeman will crush brooks brothers. Made to measure ( ie semi custom) is a very good way to go.

Hickey will be priced the best with the dollar where it is.

Warning: you won't be able to go back.

I have 4 Brooks Brothers suits that I have bought that are for everyday use. They were originally priced around $600 but received 20% off coupons. I have 2 other suits that I bought for special occasion, a Hugo Boss tuxedo and navy Calvin Klien. I spent close to $1000 for each and they fit perfectly, because they have higher armholes. Like others have said, check the Neiman outlet and the Brooks Brothers outlet if there's one in San Marcos. Also, buying a couple of sportcoats will prolong the life span of your suit wardrobe.

I have not had good experiences with BB. I only wear Hickey suits but I bot all mine at warehouse sales at $450 a piece. They usually need some alterations but I'm buying the wool not the fit. If I keep my eyes open here in SA I can get them around $700 at Satels.

all of my suits are custom made. they fit perfect, are made from better materials and cost less than what you will find at BB or any department store. i prefer an english style cut but you can get either custom made for you.

my guy is out of Ft Worth but travels all over the State. He used to be with Tom James but went out on his own. He is excellent.

He comes to your office with his material books, you pick everything out and he measures you. He brings your suits back to you when they come in for a fitting to make sure they came out great.

I could not recommend him higher. Let me know if anyone would like his name and number.

I bought suits from Culwell & Sons a few years back and they are great. I think they have the same deal going on right now that they did when I bought them - like 3 custom made suits and a custom made sport coat for around $1500. Suits are great. Maybe not Armani or anything, but a lot better than Dillards or a department store and around the same price (with the special).

i have had several PMs asking for my tailor's contact info. here it is:

Name: Kip Boydston
Phone: 817-484-2807
email: [email protected]
website: The Link

please let him know that I referred you and he will give you a better deal.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I am happier in my life having read this thread. I have one suit, 9 years old, bought at Macy's for a funeral.

Doesn't make me a better person, of course. Just happier for my sartorial fate.
