Expat in Hong Kong

HorninHongKong or any others,

I'm going to HKG for a job interview in June. If I'm offered the job I'd stay in the U.S. for the first few years but would eventually have the opportunity to move to Hong Kong for a year or two sometime down the road.

I'm bringing my wife on the interview trip and arriving a couple of days early so we can look around and decide if we do indeed want to move there eventually. If we decide we never want to live there I will not take the job. But we are both open-mined and excited about exposing our kids to another culture for a year or two. That's about the longest we'd be staying there, eventually coming back to the states for good.

Here's the background info. We are mid-30's with a two year-old and another on the way. It would be a minimum of four years from now before we would move there. So my oldest would be 6 and my youngest would be about 3.

We are not too interested in the excitement of the nightlife. We are very concerned about the pollution and it's affect on our kids. The comapny would be paying a housing allowance of about $48,000 HKD per month. The company will also cover tuition at an English Foundation School for the kids. I'm not yet sure where those schools are located.

We would like to live in a nice condo or house near the beach and near other outdoor activities, parks, trails, etc... We prefer a place that costs no more than the company allowance. The housing allowance is good for either a mortgage or rent. My guess is that we'd probably just rent since I don't know much about the real estate market there. We would like to avoid buying a car over there. I'd need to commute to the airport once or twice a week, but I'm willing to deal with a crappy commute if it means putting my kids in a better place near fun outdoor stuff.

I understand that there's a large expat colony in Discovery Bay and I call tell you that I probably want to stay away from that. I'm told that it's too Westernized and that kind of defeats the purpose of moving there in the first place. I'm also told that DB has too many of my future co-workers and their families living there in close quarters with all the soap operas and drama that goes with that, and also that the pollution there is the worst in HKG.

A friend recommended Sai Kung.or somwhere else in the Eastern side of the New Territories. We'll probably start out there.

We'll have about two days to look around. What else should we see in order to decide if it's the right move for us?

I've never been to Hong Kong personally, but have friends from there. They love it. I would highly recommend it, Hong Kong is one of those amazing cities in the world you can brag to all your friends you lived in. It's like New York City. Plus you can travel around the region. Think about visiting Bangkok, Singapore, Taipei, Tokyo, and Shanghai on weekends!

The pollution is growing because of factories on the mainland, but the city is still pretty clean. It's not like Cairo or big cities in South Asia where the air pollution is out of control.

I understand your want to stay away from the expat community, but Hong Kong is not what it used to be. I would stay away from the NT. Mid-Levels or Discovery Bay are the best (i.e. Hong Kong island.)

Also, the distances in the Far East are greater than they appear to be. Hong Kong to anywhere other than Tawain or Manilla is a 5 hour flight.

i love hk and i have lots of family still there, but man it is dirty. i would second the suggestion on the mid-levels area and if you can swing it the peak is nice. those would probably be your best options (nice places and convenience to business district).

Thanks. Are there any parks in the Mid-levels? If we're gonna be in a condo we have to have someplace nearby to take the kids.

Someone else recently recommended the south side of HK island, as there are lots of good beach communities and less pollution. But I don't know much about the area.

check out this website:

It will give you all the info you need and you can ask endless questions.

further give me a ring if you want (ill pm you) and we can discuss all this.

Offhand - 48k will be about 2/3 what you need for a place so thats not bad.

I would not worry about living around expats - in fact I'd recommend it - you will still be in HK and theres no getting away from the experience. It will be nice to not be 'too local' especially i expect for the wife and the kids.

You can get a decent place in stanley or repulse bay (an apartment likely but theres other things too) for like 70k. it will be smaller than youre used to. No way 48k is enough for a family of 4. I pay 60k for a 1600 sq foot apt that is considered massive by everyone here, (Normally a family of 4-5 lives in that space.

Regarding pollution - like most things you read it is overblown - if you live in Beijing it's reality - here - meh I don't really notice it. I think it's something for soccer moms to complain about.

There are other things to negotiate for in you rpackage that we can discuss when you call me.

You don't need a car for sure. Taxis are dirt cheap and the public trans is the best in the world.

I would def live on HK island and not discobay - too isolated.

Schooling is v expensive and it's hard to get the kids into the right school - demand is very high so sort that out before.

I can tell you this - I'd rather live here than anywhere in the US right now especially if you work in the financial markets like me. It's a great experience and I'd kill to have my kids (that I dont ahve) over here learning mandarin and experienceing the life here.

Eventually ill buy a ranch and retire in texas but HK is the place to be now.

however who knows in 4 years. thats so far down the road.

No ******* way. NONONO

' understand your want to stay away from the expat community'

No.

'Also, the distances in the Far East are greater than they appear to be. Hong Kong to anywhere other than Tawain or Manilla is a 5 hour flight.
'

SE asia is 3 hrs - just got back from thailand. 3 hours.

'Thanks. Are there any parks in the Mid-levels? If we're gonna be in a condo we have to have someplace nearby to take the kids. '

Plenty of parks and trails everywhere, You wont be able to get a big enough place in mid levels i dont think on 48k. I live in the midlevels and looked extensively.

'i love hk and i have lots of family still there, but man it is dirty'

Weird - HK is much cleaner than London or NYC. Well at least where I live.

Good stuff, thanks man.

After looking at the expat website, which is great by they way, I think we'll check out DB, Gold Coast, Stanley and Repulse Bay. We aren't looking specifically for a place to live yet. We just need to check out some areas to find out what's out there. It wold be a minimum of 3 to 4 years before we'd actually move out there.

The job is with Cathay Pacific. I'd be commuting to the airport, not Central. So DB makes the most sense. But I'd probably only have to make the commute once a week or so, so I don't mind being a little further away, ie Stanley, Repulse Bay.

DB looks like it has everything we want. I've just heard from a few disgruntled residents about being neighbors with your co-workers and such. I guess it's whatever you make it.

We'll also be doing some basic tourism out there. I'd like to go up the Peak, and maybe out to Lamma Island for seafood, and to one really nice meal in the city. Anything else we shouldn't miss on a 3 or 4 day visit?

I would not live in DB because I would not like the isolation and having my life regulated by the boat schedule but that presupposes you would want to come to HK Island a lot which you may not.
