Exactly how much money did Charles give up?

There's a great thread on Orangebloods quantifying how much money Charles can expect to make over the next few years if he's the first back taken in the 3rd round.
These numbers are taken from Lorenzo Booker's contract(who was the 1st RB taken in the 3rd round last year)
4 year contract worth a total of 2.1 million dollars with 435K of that guaranteed.
1st year 285K
2nd year 370K
3rd year 460K
4th year 550K.
These are league minimums plus a 10K bonus.
Is there any doubt that if Charles returned this year he would've been drafted higher and would've received a much bigger pay day?

maybe this will force other players to listen to the coaching staff instead of outside influences. there is a reason not a lot of jrs. go pro, the chance of moving up in the draft means a bigger payday.

Sucks for them and us. Would have loved to see JC and Finley for another year. I felt like Finley was just starting to get worked into the offense. With a big year and the additional attention of being seniors they both could have been much higher picks.

JC jumped too soon, he should have waited to hear from all the other juniors, almost all of whom jumped in pushing him down from his original projected slot. Finley needs the money, period whatever amount it is. He had no choice.

As between the two its JC who had the choice and made a poor decision based on incomplete information, whoever was advising him should be ashamed of themselves.

If JC had stayed I think he would have been a Heisman Trophy candidate and a had a great year with that offensive lineman. I agree. Sometimes it is best to listen to your coaches rather than outside influences. Also I think Sweed could have improved himself if he had remained another year.

I would love to have Sweed another year too, but he was a senior.

this is the second time I have seen people say Sweed should have stayed, if he did UT would probably be under investigation by the NCAA.

hopefully Charles pans out in KC and can make great money on his 2nd contract.

I'd have loved to see JC stay too, but what if he had blown out his knee? I know they can get insurance, but what does that cost and how much does it cover? Also what if he did not have a career ending injury that was covered by the insurance but just had a series of nagging injuries that caused him to have a bad season and was drafted even lower?

What I'm saying is that when you are talking about millions of dollars, that first few million is way more important than the last few. If you offered me 5MM, no questions asked, or a 75% chance to get 10MM with a 25% chance to get nothing, I'd take the 5MM in a heartbeat.

By comparison, Kenny Irons, the first running back taken in the second round, got a 4 year, $5 million dollar contract, with 1.75 M guaranteed, but Chris Henry, the second back taken in the second round last year (one pick later), got a contract for 4 years and 2.89 million.

Huge disparity in those two contracts. The first would indicate Charles might have lost a lot of money. The second would indicate he only lost what he would easily recover by playing an extra year and accelerating the point at which he can negotiate new contracts.

Are we really going to miss him? I mean I give him love for being a Longhorn and everything, but somebody has to say it, so here it is-

While a great back, Charles puts the ball on the carpet more than any back in recent memory.

There I said it- take your shots.

All I have to say is:
Chad Henne
Mike Hart
Marrio Manningham.

All three had a pretty good chance of going in the first round in they had come out.

Did you watch last years OU game? This was not an isolated incident, he has been known to drop the rock on occasion.

I loved watching him run, he has world class speed no doubt, but if he coughs up the ball with the Big Boys, he will be in Canada.

That said, I wish him all the money and success he can get.

I ran the numbers for first, second and third round picks and took into account the average career length for draftees from each round. From what I can tell, over the course of his NFL career, JC gave up eleventy billion dollars.

There is no number such as eleventy bibllion.

There IS an eleventy quintillion, but it can only be used once every 247,001 light years.

Got it?

Kind of a "no ****" comment, but you won't really know until next year. Pre-draft, Charles was considered no better than 4th/5th on the RB chart (behind McFadden, Mendenhall & Stewart, and about on par with Felix Jones). Who's to say he'd be in a better position next year? Off the top of my head, guys like Beanie Wells, CJ Spiller, the kid from GA, Stafon Johnson at SC all might be in the draft and might be considered better prospects (I'm not making that claim, just for example purposes). And what if a couple of other guys blow up? Hell, who had Kevin Smith, Matt Forte and Chris Johnson on the draft radar this time last year?

When I look at these drafts no'a'days I tend to look at the team they go to. While I wished Charles had stayed another year, I'm happy he's at KC. Mel K. gave KC an A, the only "A" in the whole draft. Charles is in with a good bunch, and he'll have Longhorn company to boot.

That said, I think he left $5-10 million on the table that would have come with a run at the Heisman next season on a Longhorn team with an improved O-line and a Kick-*** defense that would have given Texas a higher winning percentage with better field position, albeit probably shorter runs for Charles.

After a good senior season and run at the Heisman, Charles would have moved up into the first round, a high pick, but this year does show this: no longer is WR or RB a top pick, but instead the draft is going for the best-of-the best of Beef. It's just a difficult position to get the kind of calling Reggie Bush got.

I think Charles will do okay. Players like him are going to go for the larger money in 4 years. Roy Williams will end up with that working for him.

I'm glad I got to see Priest Holmes play in person. He scored a TD right in front of me at San Francisco in 2002. When the Chiefs play in Houston, I might have to hit 71 and I-10 and make a go for that one.
