I moved to Southwest Austin and now Nutty Brown Cafe is like 5 miles from us. I went to their website and they look to have quite a bit of good Texas Country music through there.
I went to see Dale Watson there last summer. It is a cool venue. We didn't eat there, just beers and cocktails. The drinks seemed pretty high. I'd go back for the right band or if I lived closer.
I've been a few times. They always seem to have a couple bands in a week. Good food. Pecan Praline. Actually, I think it was once just a small candy store, with Praline being their specialty. It's grown quite a bit. Pretty cool outdoor venue in the back under the trees.
Been there for the food on more than a few occasions (we must live close; I'm behind the Y in Oak Hill).
Food is always about par for what you'd consider a 'generic' restaurant. Finally had their ribs last time I went - won't do that again as it seemed to be parboiled & heavy sauce (I am one w ho likes sauce from time to time, but this was way too much).
The wife usually gets their catfish & likes it.
If you go on an evening, stay away from the back L corner that abuts the bar because the windows leak smoke from the bar a little bit.
Haven't done any outdoors concerts even though I really want to catch a gig (stuck with little kids @ the moment & babysitting is a chore).
I live in that vicinity also and Ive been there about 5 times. Dinner is average but ive had there sunday brunch and its not bad at all. I havent seen a concert there but it seems like a good venue. You do get free cups everytime...at least I think there free...
I wouldn't rule out eating there as the food is certainly not terrible. The food is good, but not great. If I was going to listen to music, I would probably go ahead and eat there for the convenience.
I'm gonna go ahead and sort of disagree w/ a few posters.
Food that I've had there has been excellent. In fact, I usually plan my work trips southwest of Austin around lunch at Nutty Browns. The "Cecil Gallo" is awesome~~not sure how healthy it is, though.
Only seen a few bands there.. Great to sit outside under the oak tree, drink a beer, listen to tunes. Pretty kid friendly as well, since there's a ton of room for the kiddo's to run/play.
food isn't bad. chicken fried was pretty decent if I remember correctly. The place has grown a lot capacity-wise in the past few years. It used to just be a little stage on the back porch. now they've built up a nice sized stage towards the back of the property with plenty of room for good size crowds. Parking can be a ***** with bigger name bands (saw Randy Rogers last summer and took a good 30-45 mins to get out). Great venue when the weather is nice.
