EURO2008 - Scottish guy.. what is he saying?

I've spoken to 3 friends since the EURO2008 tourney has started and it's unanimous that we often don't have a clue what the Scottish? (maybe Irish?) commentator is saying.

He'll rattle off some jibberish in his native accent, and I just sit in bewilderment trying to understand what on earth he just said.
Case in point, a buddy came over this afternoon to watch the Holland Italy game, and we would rewind some of the comments a few times, and simply couldn't understand the guy.

This is the 3rd game in 3 days I've heard him in, and I still have no clue.

Can ESPN not hire people that speak understandable English?!?!?
It certainly doesn't help with growing the sport over here.

he's approximately 3.2719 million times better than anyone American that could call a soccer game.

that's probably why ESPN rolled with him

I'm guessing you mean Andy Gray, who is Scottish and a good analyst with a lot of pedigree from Sky Sports coverage in the UK (as well as being an international player back in the day) but is new to US coverage and uses a lot of colloquialisms and has a pretty robust accent.

I much prefer him to Tommy Smyth, who is annoying and clueless, but I can certainly understand Gray not coming across well to the US audience.

I liked him fine. Although the gopher comment did confuse me until the next few sentences made it obvious he meant 'golfer'.

He does need to bone up on Rule 11 though.

I like him and I don;t have much trouble understanding him. Plus, as mentioned, there's literally nobody in the US (other than the Spanish commentators) that is worth a ****.

It could be worse -- Ty Keough could still be in the booth. I thought ESPN should move heaven and earth to get Ray Hudson for the tournament. That guy is "magic"

I like Gray, but Julie Foudy adds nothing to broadcast, other than reinforcement of the American stereotype that soccer is a "girl's game." She should've been canned immediately when she started talking about how hot Ronaldo is.

Julie Foudy has GOT to go.

For the OP, honestly? You can't understand English? And you can't differientiate between Scottish and Irish accents which are totally different? just wow.

I'm amazed that Andy has let loose with several F-bombs. Not much funnier than hearing a Scot say fuukin'. I used to ref quite a bit and there was one local club coach who has the same heavy Scottish accent. Off the pitch, he was a great guy but put him on the sideline and he was a horrible human being. Still, I would crack up everytime he would say things like "Whut? Er you a fuukin' idyut'? He used this with his players, the center, the ARs, the parents, and just about around who came into contact with him.

One day, he was coaching at a tournament when two of his teams were playing on adjacent fields. He wanted to be allowed to stand between the two fields and coach both at the same time. One was a U10 game and the other a U14 game. We told him he couldn't do that because the kids and refs wouldn't know who he a cussing out. We also told him that we didn't know how to handle a coach if he got thrown out of one game.....did he get to stay for the other. That really pissed him off.

Pedro is useful in interviews after MLS matches when the player doesn't speak much English. I do like that he asks in English for the audience, then the player in Spanish, and translates for the audience after the player answers in Spanish.
Pedro, which not great or riveting, is useful for his bi lingual ability, IMHO. I also don't dislike him really, even though he isn't particularly endearing either.

You're once again starting with the absurd assumption that men and women are identical. They are not. Sports are nearly essential to men, especially to young men. Not only are sports not essential to women, they cause them to act contrary to their feminine nature. On top of that, we encourage them to get into cutting and jumping sports which have severe long term physical consequences.
