If you're traveling on I-10 and want a unique BBQ experience, venture the few miles off the interstate to Waedler and find Eureste's Grocery. It's legit, small-town greatness. Through the front door (with attached cow bell) and grocery store portion of the place, there's a meat counter and some picnic tables set up in two back rooms. There's also a layer of smoke, which has emanated from the pit and the pitmaster's cigs, hovering under the low ceilings.
My brisket was a nice end piece with plenty of bark--even still a plastic fork served as a fine cutting tool. And as instructed, I helped myself to some of the white bread and sauce sitting out on the counter. Sat back. Enjoyed delicious Q and surroundings.
Only question now is: where to next?
