Charlie Strong

Charlie Strong struggled in a public speaking appearance at a camp in San Angelo.
SAN ANGELO, Texas -- A 20-minute slot for new Texas head coach Charlie Strong stood out on the three-day schedule at the recent coaching clinic at Angelo State -- one of my stops on a recent mid-June trip through Texas. The clinic is a 40-year tradition for the state’s high school coaches to learn from their college counterpart and was one of his first outings in front of a large number of the state’s high school coaches. I was intrigued to hear what Strong’s message would be in one of his first outings in front of a large number of high school coaches.

Part of the intrigue stemmed from the perception -- held by many of his peers and even those who know him well –- that Strong is something of an introvert, and that the social aspect of the UT job might not be his, ahem, strong suit.

Those in attendance didn't seem impressed by Strong’s time on the stage. Maybe it was coincidence, but someone let out a loud laugh just as Strong wrapped.

“I think everyone was shocked. It was that bad,” one coach told me later.

“It made me miss Mack,” one joked.

Another: “If I was the coach at Texas, I would act like I had bigger balls than that.”

Strong spoke so rapidly, jamming one sentence on top of another as if he were playing verbal Tetris, that you would have thought he had two minutes, not 20. It was difficult to follow his train of thought or discern the central points being made.

The bulk of the address sounded like something more suited for parents or boosters than people who also coach for a living.

An example: He said he intended to “put the ‘T’ back in Texas” with “toughness, trust, togetherness and teamwork.”

Or the primary mission being, “We want to see young men graduate,” and “We want to win championships,” because “there’s nothing more fun than a championship.”

I jotted “LOL” in my notebook when he told coaches “either you’re growing or you’re dying.”

What does it all mean for Strong in his first year at Texas? That’s where we begin my Texas Takeaways, which include FSU’s impressive new defensive coordinator, insight behind the Lane Kiffin hire and more.

Not a Strong impression

In the most connective moment of his speech, Strong closed by inviting coaches to visit campus, and he actually acknowledged the situation. It might have been a nice place to start; it was the only portion that didn’t feel rehearsed or cliché-ridden.

“We are the premier university in this state,” he said. “I know you’re all watching to see what happens. We have some work to do. We’re going to get that done because of the staff we have.”

It is no secret that Strong isn't a silver tongued devil, but I also think there's a possibility that Mr. Haney's perception is skewed and his opinion somewhat biased, having graduated from the other UT and spending so much time covering the SEC and OU.

His bio says he graduated from Tennessee in 2003, so he's probably still pissed about Texas stealing Chris Simms from them.

Just win, Charlie!

Nothing that ESPN publishes or airs should be taken for anything other than filler. If you are not a SEC school, Notre Dame or USC you are **** in their book. Strange situation with the LHN which only shows a disconnect between the business side of Disney and the egoistic ESPN.

Correct. Winning will trump all else. I believe Strong will win.

So Freaking What!, it's just another writer looking for a story in the off season. Hell I am so bored might just find all his articles and critique is writing skills with the intent of making him look bad.

Truly is a boring time of year for football and UT (e.g. recruiting), but what I love about this board are the sun shine boys. Don't let the truth slap you in the face.

Maybe Strong could use a good speech writer coach.

If he thinks that high school coaches are going to be bothered by a "cliche-ridden speech", he really doesn't know Texas high school coaches...

I don't see a lot of sun shine being pumped on this thread.

I don't give a *%%^$# what others think or that CS is not a great speaker/entertainer. I just want Strong to put a good, competitive team on the field ... and take care of problems when they occur on and off the field.

I agree with the few posts above. I truly don't give a S$/! If Charlie is JFK or not, as long as he is a tough football coach.
I love Mack, and defend him still, but this I know,
Charlie is a football coach. He will win, and Texas will be tough.
Natty Champs? I have my doubts.
But a program we can be proud of? Mark it down.
Even if he doesn't sound like Barack Obama explaining Jeremiah Wright.

I don't know about you all but I don't need a silver-tongued devil to make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside about my football program. The team can take care of that 100% when I see them laying the wood with swagger again on Saturdays. As long as the coach has honor, truly cares about being the leader of the Texas Longhorns, and does a solid job as a head football coach through on-field performance...sign me up.

In today's game I'm sick and tried of the double-talk and sunshine pumping from coaches, even when your team is playing like garbage. Nothing worse than when they ask a coach about a handful of players and all I hear is he's doing great, rah, rah, rah. Not everyone is doing everything right all the time. And using those moments is a good way to communicate with players they want more from them. Just have the balls to tell the truth in a respectful manner.

One of the great moments of the Strong tour stop I went to was when he spoke about Caleb Bluiett in front of him. He applauded how much talent he has and how he can be a beast at times. Then followed up with all that is left is to get him to be consistent. He said he's like Jekyll and Hyde in practice, Caleb knows what he means, and they're gonna get there. I respected the hell out of that comment. It showed me he was still being a head coach 1st, and a PR man 2nd...even at a PR event. That will provide more results driven motivation to the player than a clappy-clap comment just for the crowd.

After the last 4 years of Mack and Jason Garrett leading my teams and smiling while losing, I'm damn glad to have Strong busting *** and telling it like it is whether you like it or now. It's called conviction in yourself and your methods. His ultimate goal is to win, not have us admire his slick speaking. No reason to hide from anyone. I'll take that any day of the week over a pep squad speech. We are on the right path...believe it.

+1

If the players believe in him and can be motivated by him, and if his staff tactically gets the players and schemes in order things otherwise will take care of themselves.

Well, just perhaps, this writer can take his "opinion" back to whatever hole he climbed out of and insure all of those he sees, that Strong is not "strong" and underestimate his coaching talent. Regardless, CS has to win and convince young men that this is the place to win a championship.

Play with pride & passion for 4 quarters, don't be soft - kick some ***, WIN games and most all of this talk will go away.

I would pose this question:

On what basis do we -- or should we -- judge or evaluate our head coach or, for that matter, our leaders? While the ability to motivate a crowd is important for recruiting and for the press, I would rather see excellence on the field, in the classroom, and success in life.

Too often many in the press choose style over substance. We see that every day. They cannot see past the presentation and, because of their myopia, they frequently misjudge the individuals they cover.

If CS fails on the field, they will have something of significance to write about. If not, than the ESPN article will be just another example of a reporter missing the point, and getting it wrong.
