Erwin Center - March Madness

We were in a suite last night for the Florida-Minnesota and Miami-Illinois games.... wow... were we at the Erwin Center? We had to raise our voices quite quite a bit to talk. For real, it we were laughing because it was like, "Oh, there is a game going on!" Usually we're just talking, eating and drinking and listening to the squeek of the sneakers coming from the floor.

And we noticed people standing up during the game in the stands.

Hmmmmm.... wonder if the product on the floor had anything to do with it....

I also wonder if it had anything to do with fans from schools who were actually excited about where their team is, and what was at stake for the games being played.

I remember how loud the AAC was a few years ago when we were there for some early round games. I also remember a pretty raucous Texas crowd at the Alamodome for the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 games vs. Michigan State and UConn. Granted, this was at the peak of UT's success and our fans tend to be of the front runner mentality, so there's always that to think about...

I've seen games at Cameron for Duke, NC, Maryland, UVA, many at Georgetown, UMASS back when they had Padilla/Camby and Calipari as coach and even UCLA on the West Coast. I have seen MANY games at the Pit in Abq. when they had Michael Cooper and were good and in the many more lean years.

Every single one of those atmospheres crush the Texas experience in both good and bad runs. Face it, we are not great fans. Don't know we ever will be either. In spurts and sometimes for specific games (even then in spurts), sure. But across the board, we don't cut the mustard and we are a shell of what some think we are or should be.

I left some off such as LSU home games, Southern in Baton Rouge, UNO in Nawlins' etc. But you get my point. We basically suck and not just in Hoops.

The last time I remember the Erwin Center being loud was when Strollin Nolan got ejected and we beat #3 Arky. I think that was 1990.

Was that the game where he walked off the court when the hogs were down big and then returned after they came back late in the game?

You guys have a very short memory. I've been to games in the last five years where it was pretty loud.

Our fans and students have the potential, but there has to be something to cheer about other than just the game being played.

Nolan left the court in protest of a zebra's call. Hoggie guard hit a 3 pointer at the buzzer to send it into OT. They had to recall the Stroller from the locker room. FEC was as loud as I can remember. I've been a season ticket holder for 30+ years and have only missed a couple of games.

I just think our fans are stuck in a bad cycle. There is no tradition of cheers or being loud a lot. So when new students come in, they do what those around them who have been there are doing.

When Ford was here there was a lot of excitement, large crowds, a sense of great things to come. Durant/Aldridge helped keep it going for a bit but one and done sucks for college programs and also hurts the NBA. What fans, or at least myself want to see is improvement, adjustments, and evolving to keep current. It was painful to watch the basketball team this year and even some of the last several years because you know what the outcome is going to be. You can't win championships with this offense unless you have a TJ Ford running it. RB has not adjusted to the personnel he has, we haven't played defense since right before Durant, our offense always struggles to get open and easy shots with the exception of a few years. It's obvious RB will be back but If there's not a huge improvement next season I will be all in for a new direction.

It was pretty dang loud when we beat a top-5 Wake Forrest team when I was a student. I was stuck in the top of the upperdeck and there was still hardly an empty seat.
