Erasing VCR tapes?

Here's a random question:

I still have my old VCR, even though it goes largely unused now. I have a pile of tapes that I'd like to erase so they're clean if I want to use them in the future.

Is there a shortcut way to do this other than just re-recording them on a blank channel or something?
