Entertainment Contract Legal Question

I have a 501c3 charitable organization and we were trying to hold a benefit concert in September 2010. We made an offer to a band at the end of June and they accepted it on July 2 via an email from thier agent.Upon thier acceptance we made a nonrefundable deposit to the venue for $4500,00 and reserved the 7 hotel rooms the band asked for. Eighteen days later they backed out after we had to demand a written contract. According to every agent we have talked to once an offer is accepted you have a contract. Is that true? If so do we have any recourse?

It sounds to me like you have a breach of contract claim. You might see if a lawyer will take the case pro bono (ie free) or on a contingency since you can also recover attorney's fees for breach of contract.
