Enterprise instant messaging

Anyone know of a good, cheap solution for instant messaging in a Windows domain environment without relying on AIM, MSN, etc.? I've looked into the free Jabber servers as well as Office Communications Server, but would like some feedback from anyone who's gone down this path before.

In my office we use a product from MessageLabs call POD (Professional Online Desktop). I allows us to IM anyone in the company.

Have you looked into installing your own XMPP server with an app such as jabberd? Last time I checked, you could auth the server against Active Directory / LDAP. Pidgin, iChat, Adium, and any other IM client that support XMPP should work.
