England's coach blames refs for the loss

Sorry but whining about officiating in a 4-1 game is ludicrous. Yes, the call was stupid and I knew that it was a goal for 100% certainty the first time I saw it in full speed, but it didn't affect the game. 4-1 is an utter blowout. It's far worse than 28-7 in football. You can't say that one missed goal screwed you over when you needed 2 more just to have a chance at going to PKs.

State an equalisation goal wiped off the board makes a MASSIVE difference in a match. The refs screwed England and Mexico both today.

What a whine, but expected from that group.

The Germans were on a roll leading up to the 4th goal, and then pulled back into a defensive wall. If they had kept up the offensive pressure they probably would have had at least one if not two more goals. England was gassed by the end of the match.

If the Germans play like they played in the middle part of the match, I haven't seen anyone who can stop them.

Certainly, Germany looked to be the stronger side. But goals are hard to come by, and refusing to acknowledge a legitimate one has a tremendous impact.

Poll fans who watched the match--even English ones--and they'd probably agree that Germany would've won. But it's impossible to predict how the game would've played out had England been granted its equalizer. There's a massive difference in tactics and decision-making when you're a goal or two down versus even-up. Massive.

Its very likely Germany would still have won, but to say it wouldnt have had an effect to have awarded a completely legit goal to tie the game is insane.

Soccer is a sport where goals are so hard to come by that it absolutely would have made a huge difference. Sadly FIFA has its head up its ***, and they are gonna get pounded world wide by the media. They seem to forget that everyone and their dog is gonna see all the screw ups by their officials on youtube over the next 4 years.

FIFA, get some form of replay or booth replays. At this level with this much importance, its got to happen.....

Unlike just about any other sport, taking away a goal in soccer is huge, especially a goal that would have left the match level going into the second half. Both german goals in the second half were on counterattacks because England were pushing forward seeking equalizers.

Was Germany the better squad yesterday, absolutely; but to say the goal didnt affect the outcome or change the entire tenor of the game is just not reasonable. Same can be said of Argie-Mexico.

fabio is trying to do what he can to deflect blame and outrun the hooligans.

he does kind of have a point. would have been a very different game from that point on. not saying the outcome would have been different, but playing from behind is very different than playing from a tie.

Yes, the call was a huge factor. Clearly, the score would of been 2-2 at halftime. England was forced to commit more players to the attack mode, and fewer to defend, leaving themselves open to Germany's counter attacks which were so successful.
This is one of those games where you want to see what would have happened had the right call been made. It may or may not have been a different outcome, but England has a legitimate gripe. Maybe the coach should not say anything, because the other side always will call you a whiner, but he is right.

Being down in the second half instead of being tied definitely would affect strategy and leave a team open to counterattacks, but England didn't defend them well.

I don't know if the coach is really guilty of whining, if all he said was what appeared in the story.

Was the call wrong?
Yes, it was.

Did it make the
difference?

Didn't look like it to me. Germany was clearly the better team.

Certainly, both teams' tactics in the second period would have been different, but I'm not convinced that it would have been likely for England to have won... it appeared that they were out-coached and out-played.

The refereeing has - as usual - been getting lots of criticism. In the instant case, the ref should have asked his linesman about it - I seem to recall that happening in an old England vs. Germany WC game, and the goal was given, and England did win that one. The ref isn't required to ask for help, but he isn't prohibited, either... my first reffing experience was in baseball, and the number one rule I learned there - which I believe applies to all officiating - is what I call the see-saw rule: "Don't call what you don't see; ask the other refs if they saw." I think too many officials ignore both parts of that, and call what they believe "must" have happened rather than what they actually saw.

There have been - as usual - far too many phantom fouls called, too many dives, and too many offside called. I thought there was a move toward making the offside call only when it was clear, but that doesn't seem to be happening.

Personally, I'd like to see the offside rule completely thrown out, and certainly the "offside trap"... think what it'd do to our version of football if receivers were forbidden from running past a defender - even if it was only before the ball was thrown - and consider that all the defenders have to do is stop and let the receiver run past them, to prevent the long pass (or worse, run the other way to put the receiver "offside").

Oh, and while we're talking rules changes... I'd love to see divers and actors start getting cards. I've seen it a few times, under the un-sportsmanlike or un-gentlemanly play rule, but I don't think it's been codified. Sure would be nice to see someone take a dive and instead of his opponent seeing yellow, the ref shows it to him.

I've never watched much World Cup, but I have to say that this is most poorly officiated tournament I've ever seen, in ANY sport.

You bring together the best soccer teams in the word for the most-watched sporting event on the planet, and they bring in these horrible cheesedicks who affect the outcomes of matches? Terrible.

couldnt have happened to a better group of people.

i was overseas the week before the cup, and all we got was bbc coverage. the fans and the announcers were obnoxiously arrogant about their chances, basically indicating that they were entitled to go to the semis, and wouldnt be challenged until they go there.

the bookies were a little more cautious, but again all agreed that england would have no issue being in the semis. most, if not all, predicted the three lions to beat the yanks by at least 2 goals.

screw them. screw rooney. they got what they deserved. i was ambivalent to them before the cup, but after watching that coverage they climbed on to my **** list.

you totally see wr's embellish contact and try to get a flag. then they protest and march back to the huddle making the "throwing flag" motions. it happens more than we think and hopefully this won't become a situation where people point out things like that.

I have it on good authority from one of our players who is now in the NFL that guys do lay down and sometimes fake an injury or a tweak to get some air. The other players know it and are thankful. It is not a common thing but it happens.

There is a certain amount of chicanery in any sport. Soccer being the most high profile globally may lead it to stick out more. Look, even us soccer fans are sick of the level of what is going on and demand change. We are not happy with it and agree it is ******** and sissy. The people that do it, suck and need to man up. There is no argument from me about it.
