question.. why would the vapor trail or whatever you want to call it be corkscrewed, twisted, and not in straight line like the path of the shuttle?

I would have thought it would have been more uniform looking.

Beautiful photo. Yo, after perusing the internets for a while, I found this page discussing the contrails of rockets/missiles. It says ther irregular corkscrew and spiral patterns are in fact caused by wind. So there ya go.
