I remember Yisrael Hawkins - my senior year at UT he and his cult distributed flyers all over campus that predicted nuclear disaster by such-and-such a date. That day passed without incident, and then what-do-you-know, more flyers from the same group pointing out some insignificant event or agreement related to nuclear weapons that had happened, and how it confirmed their prophecies even though the media was ignoring it.

I dont know how these guys have been around - but from a purely logistical perspective - if you are going to start a doomsday cult, whats the ideal length of time into the future to set for the end? If you say the earth is going to end in 2040 not many people are going to change their lives over, if you say its going to end in a month and a half you wont get to enjoy the fruits of being an omniscient deity.

Somewhere there is an ideal middle ground.
