Okay people a little help please.
what's this place like? is it just an opened room floor area for concerts? my daughter and her friend was to see Silverstein in March so I am wanting to know what the place is like. I took her to Java Jazz in Houston awhile back and it was just an opened room / floor no seats.

thanks for any information.

there are multiple areas of Emo's. Emo's outside is just that, outside with a covered stage and crowd area. Emo's inside has a bar, stage, crowd area. Emo's annex is a little nicer if I recall, but same idea.

It's been awhile (being older, married, and a father), but those bathrooms were absolutely disgusting.

I love the place. Lots of good memories.

outside?? fanfreakintastic

Emo's is an all ages venue, and of all the times i've been there I've never had a problem. I would stay with your kids obviously, but its a fine place for them to be with parental supervision.

My friends band played there 2 weeks ago at the stage at the corner of 6th and RR. The bartender was the worst I've ever experienced. You'd wait in line for 30 minutes while she did random stuff besides serving the people waiting.

Bevoette, you have NEVER been to Emo's? How does that happen?

I have so many fond memories there.

If you get a chance, check out the band, the Fuckemos. Probably the best thing to come out of Austin since, well, I dont know.... but they ruled.

I stood shoved up against the stage at an Andrew W.K. concert there a few years ago, I couldn't hear for a few days afterwards. It was badass.

Bevoette, the main all-ages live music places I think of in town are Stubb's, Emo's, and Antone's. And I guess Red 7.

Anyway, security is great, plenty of kids, there will not be an issue.

It is a good safe venue.

They will dig it.

The restrooms are quite legendary, but...

Man, I remember going there back in the day. We'd usually start at Lovejoy's for some beer, then go over to Emo's for some live music. Great times.

Another great Emo's story:

Still one of the most talked-about Austin club gigs in history is Johnny Cash's SXSW show at Emo's on March 17, 1994. Then-Emo's general manager David Thomson was on the bridge.

"At 3pm, as I was counting out the banks for the bartenders, I heard a knock at the front door. A few seconds later, one of my doormen told me that someone, indeed, is knocking at the door and could he have the keys to unlock it.

"Being the cautious manager that I am with an office full of money, I asked my doorman to go back and find out who was there before I let him unlock the door. When he returned, he was a little slow to answer my question.

"'So who was it?' I asked.

"'Ummm ... Johnny Cash,' he replied.

"'Who?'

"'Johnny Cash.'

"'Look, I'm really busy and don't have time for this. It's probably one of the bartenders screwing with you.'

"'I don't know. It sounds like Johnny Cash.'

"'Christ, Johnny Cash is not wandering around Sixth Street. Hell, even I can do a Johnny Cash impersonation.'

"As I approached the front door, there was another knock.

"'Who is it?' I asked.

"'John Cash.'

"Wow. Even I had to admit it sounded like Johnny Cash. Damn good impersonation!

"As I opened the door, a hand thrust through the light, and a dark figure entered the room.

"'Hello, I'm John. John Cash. And I will be working for you tonight.'

"'Uhh ...' was about all I could muster."

That is very cool of you for taking your kid and her friend to see shows. Badass. As stated above they have plenty of security and it is a safe place. While the usual things at just about any music show exist, you will be able to perch on a bleacher seat and have a view of them and the show. Take earplugs though if you are not into the dead ear effect.

back in the day, i used to do the Lovejoy's first, then head to Emo's. Back when it opened, (and i know this will be hard to believe) but it was free to get in, no cover. They made their money on booze sales. And i am talking FREE with some pretty "big name" national bands playing there. Well, big in indie circles.

And maybe emo's has changed, but i never once saw anyone in there that was even close to 13.

my 14-yr old too is going to a concert there soon. damn if i can remember the name of the band now. crazy kids today. but it's coming up in a couple of fridays from now.

anyway, back in my day, like when johnny cash was there, it was a general admission, rush the stage kind of place. she has a ticket with a reserved seat. that surprised me. emo's has either changed, or they setting up differently for this show.

My daughter will be 13 this year. I'm just going to slit my wrists. I'm sure it will be less painful than dealing with the onslaught of puberty, boy bands, and dating.
At least she likes Green Day instead of some stupid **** like Omarion, or Backstreet Boys.

Green Day is a boy band with 3 additional piercings each.

But that is a much better start.

I've never heard of or seen Emo's set up any other way than GA. I wish Fugazi would play there again. Them + $2-2.50 PBR tallboys is a great night.

I have been to many shows at Emo's and none of them has ever had reserved seating. Weird.

Bevoette - make sure y'all use the restroom before you get there, the women's restroom is almost as bad as the men's.

Have fun!

I was there last night to see Lupe Fiasco. I was cold, damn cold! I had to break out my snowboard jacket to stay warm. As has been said before, the bathrooms are gross. There are no seats and the music is loud but not mixed very well.

I love going to shows at Emo's. I've been there dozens of times. It's perfectly safe, I'd say 10x as safe as a high school football game. As has been said, it's loud, really loud. As far as the bathrooms go. I stick to the port-a-potty's. They are much less gross.

Thanks for the information ! I will warn the girls about the bathrooms.. still now sure if we are going but good to know info.
