Elliptical Machine?

My wife and I are looking to buy an elliptical machine for the house. We are willing to spend up to $1,000. Any ideas on what brand to buy? Extensive research on the internet has just left me more confused.

They are sort of weird at first, at least for me. I started using one at the gym the last few weeks. Percor is the brand at the NW YMCA. Though i still sometimes seems to get a "hitch" inb my leg where I am not smooth on the rotation and my knee sort of locks up for a second.

$3,000? Why don't you just go to Sears and buy a regular one and wear it out and replace it 10 times over the next 30 years?

Our building recently upgraded the equipment in the fitness room. The elliptical trainer they bought is very nice, but still doesn't compare to the Precors at my gym. The budget models probably get the job done, but I doubt they're completely smooth operators.

I found a good deal in Houston about 6 months ago. The retail price was $2500 and I bought it for $1700. I have not seen any of these go for $1K.

The people I know in the fitness business are skeptical of cheap ones for home use. It may depend on how heavy you and the wife are. The big $10,000 ones at fitness centers get worn out after a year or so, of course that's with heavy use. (no pun intended.) I've looked around and you can sometimes find good deals at garage or estate sales.

I got a good Nautilus NE3000 I think it's called for right at 2,000. Has the arm action and reverse action and a smooth motion. I think they replace the parts for like 3 or 5 years.
