Anyone familiar with a good sturdy make/model to recommend for home use?

Second question... Is there any strong reason why a stationary bike would be better?

If you can afford it, I second Precor. They weren't in our price range, so we went with the Multisports Elliptix 6600L after demoing a number of machines.

A stationary bike will take up less floorspace. I think the elliptical gives you more flexibility in your workouts, and it's a better clothes rack.
