hopefully there are some.....

i'm looking for a hotel for the sun bowl.... yeah, yeah keep laughing. regardless, i am kind of a gritty guy and would like to stay close to the border. as i will likely spend most of my time in juarez. so i am looking for a hotel, preferrably not a chain, but if that is all there is that is fine.

if you have ever been to laredo, i would like to stay in something very similar to the La Posada. right on the rio grande, american side, in the middle of the crap... but a nice hotel.

anyway, any help would be appreciated. looking on the web has not yeilded much and because i have never been there i'm not real sure about some of my options.

I'm not in El Paso but had an office there and was in town a couple of times a month for four years.

Camino Real is downtown and closest to the border. Large older hotel but probably the best run in El Paso. The bar was supposedly built 150 yrs ago and incorporated into the hotel. The property has been several chains including Westin until Camino Real purhcased it about 10-12 years ago. Rates are reasonable ($100-150).

Embassy Suites on I-10 is good but DO NOT get a room facing the freeway.

Marriott by airport has always been a disappointment.

Hilton at airport is nice but nothing special.

The Camino is a dump and that is being generous. The bar is great but otherwise it sucks. There are two new hotels downtown - the Doubletree and the Artisan. The Doubletree is pretty nice. The Sun Bowl Basketball Tournament is having its teams stay there and the OU Alumni Association is staying there too. Haven't been to the Artisan yet - it has only been open a few months. It's owned by a guy who owns some hotels in Vegas and he's trying to make it a swanky Vegas type place.

Of course, if you're planning on going to Juarez, don't make long term reservations - you may not come back. Translation - don't freakin go to Juarez, please.

thanks for the information. notreally is not scared of the border town. i know it's dangerous, but i don't live like that. i'm gonna get drunk, eat tacos, and stop by the pharmacia.

it's new years man!! surely the cartels will take NYE off. even murderers and drug dealers have to take a break.

notreally, if you are going with a special someone with no access to your finances, I have a great suggestion for romance. At the Sun Bowl there is a mountain side where fans sit. I don't even think you need a ticket either. A lovely setting to watch a game AND for some lovin'.

why do i feel like i am being setup loop?

seriously though, the violence doesn't scare me at all. people get killed daily in border towns. alwyas. it is worse in juarez obviously, but as long as you are street smart.... which i happen to be.... i'll be fine.

i might even stay on the mexican side.

Guys just let the Darwinism take it's course.

Yea, Juarez is a great city to stay. They even have a rusty see-saaw, so take your family too.

Seriously you won't be so "Street smart" with a bullet in your head.

I grew up in El Paso and have family in Juarez, I just call it J-Town. I am a little scared but I know I will go to Juarez a few times over the holiday.

From what I have heard most of the downtown area bars etc have been closed due to violence on the streets. There is stuff open but its more of a shady type of bar if you know what I mean. J-Town used to be lots of fun but people are scared and dont really go out like they used to.

I would take a cheap *** rental car to get around J-town since walking in the d-town area over there is not appealing any more.

I cant wait to get down there for the food. Tacos, tortas, menudo, tamales, burritos hell yea if I am there might as well get me some of that.
