Ehlinger is Colts New Number 1 QB

Sam really has a great opportunity to prove he can play in the NFL. He is definitely not coming in just to play out the season since Indy is still in the playoff hunt. Also two of his greatest games in college were against two number one overall draft picks. So, yeah I am excited to see what he can do.

Pre 1961: Johnny U & the Baltimore Colts were my favorites. I was later torn when they faced the Cowboys in the SB.

Old becomes new: I now LOVE me sum Indi Colts & their QB.

(Note: Johnny U was 1 of the toughest S'sOB's to ever play the game. Sam's pretty damned tough himself.)

I read a biography of Johnny Unitas when I was a child in the 60's. I read the chapter about the 1958 championship game and the original "The Drive" over and over as Unitas methodically (calling all the plays himself) led the team down the field, throwing to Raymond Berry and then Alan Ameche smashing over the goal line to win the game in overtime.

1st pass was complete to set up a 3rd and 2, where he dodged a couple of defenders to buy time, threw for what would have been the 1st down right before being tackled, and hit his man right in-between the numbers. And he dropped it. :/

E has apparently turned it on in the second half and the Colts are ahead 16-7 with 11 mins left in the fourth.

It was a brutal loss for Colts and Sam. Colts fumbled 2X in the red zone, Sam and the RB. But with just over 2 min left, Sam ran for what appeared to be a 1st down. He started the forward slide inches before the 1st down. Reich challenged the call but was upheld as short and 4th down. They punt to Wash and Heinicke takes them 89 yards in 2:17 to score with :22 secs left. He floated a ball to McLaurin at the goal line and the DB (terrible secondary) mis-timed the jump and the WR ripped the ball out of the DB's hands at the 1. Next play QB sneak TD. PAT good - :22 left - BUT it's not over. - From the 25, Sam throws a perfect pass to the 50, WR on the run and he DROPS IT! He would've run to the Wash 40 with about 15 secs left to get into FG range. That was the ball game. So close. I wanted Sam to get his first NFL win. And overall, he played well enough. Had a 100 QBR. Lost 17-16.

Summary of Colts fans' thoughts on Sam from reddit:

Ehlinger looked awesome and we maintain the tanking. Win-win.

That Pittman drop was PERFECTLY placed.

DPI on Campbell was a certain touchdown otherwise.

Pierce jumped a bit too early and missed a sideline pass, but placement was solid.

Solid scrambling only when necessary.

Did not play hero ball except for the last shovel pass, when he had to ... which was actually caught lol

There were stretches where offense looked the best it has all year, just couldn't maintain it consistently and had 2 poorly timed turnovers. We also got too conservative at the end.

Honestly glad we have Matty Ice to mentor this guy. Solid first NFL start for Sam, let's hope we see some major growth!

Sam didn’t even get a chance to make the game winning drive… basically because of that drop. That was the most brutal part for me. He threw the exact throw needed in that moment right on the money. Couldn't have been a more perfect pass and Pittman was just like nah

Turnovers, overly conservative play calls, and a stupid *** drop did us in...again

Hey, at least Sam looks somewhat promising

Ehlinger played pretty well. Definitely better behind these overpaid traffic cones than Matt Ryan.

Sam looked really good despite the stat sheet— I’m really excited. Tank or not, Sam seems to be at least a guy who could be a starter going forward. Obviously we’ll have to see more but I’m happy.

And not just picking out the good ones, this is pretty much what all the comments look like.

Other than the fumble, Sam did enough to win that game.
Looked good for first start.
Defense just needed to stop them one more time.
Even hold them to a field goal..

First Longhorn QB to get a 100+ passer rating in his first career NFL start.

I thought he looked good in the condensed game clips. Didn't make dumb plays with the ball. Kind of reminded me of the impact that Cooper Rush had on the Cowboys while Dak was hurt, sans Eagles game.
