Effect of Chiles' move

Does John Chiles' move to receiver now mean that both Case McCoy and Conner Wood will redshirt? Gilbert almost certainly won't shirt now, so it would benefit McCoy and Wood to take a shirt and potentially have two years to start if Gilbert goes to the NFL before his senior year.

I would think McCoy would redshirt but probably not Wood. That puts them all a year of eligibility apart.

It's pretty clear that GG will not redshirt and that was probably the main reason why Wood committed to us. Wood and McCoy will likely redshirt putting 2 years in between GG and Wood.

coolhorn - that's a good question.

(1) The initial effect of John Chiles' move is to eliminate any semblance (however dim) of the likely involvement, on any substantive basis, of a true dual-threat QB in the Horns' offensive plans for the foreseeable future.

(2) The second effect could be more positive than the first -- if John Chiles can help the Horns in a significant way at WR (and the critical element there could be his running ability, both as a receiver and a RB out of the slot -- e.g., Percy Harvin at Florida). However, realistically, we're stacked at SE with Malcolm Williams and Dan Buckner, and we also have Jordan Shipley and Brandon Collins back at Flanker.

If we go to our multiple-WRs set, we have James Kirkendoll back as our third WR ... but there may be some room there, and obviously moreso when we use four WRs. John has the football speed and the physical size to add another dimension (as a receiver and runner out of the slot) to our offense -- and his athletic ability could make the difference in creating substantive misdirection in our running game ...

... while also giving the 2009 Horns more firepower with our downfield passing game.

Having both Malcolm Williams and John Chiles as deep threats on the football field at the same time -- along with our more precise receivers (like Shipley and Collins) underneath the deep pass coverage ... could be the ticket to a Big-12 Conference title for the 2009 Horns.

We'll see what happens.

Thanks KC and others. This is a move that's been a couple of years in coming, and Chiles needs to be on the field. I'm wondering if he becomes the new Quan Cosby, a player with multiple skills who can meet more than one need.

I'm not so sure that Gilbert will leave UT early, but if one or both of McCoy and Wood shirts, it will give them at least a year after Gilbert leaves, and maybe two.

I love the idea of getting a stud quarterback every year. We're lucky that Colt McCoy turned into the player he did, but I wouldn't want us to wind up as short at quarterback as we did a couple of years ago. We need to always have options there.

They were both going to shirt whether Chiles moved or not, because Gilbert was going to play all along.

In 2005 I said that I could never imagine throwing a 6'2" 185-lb dude out there as a redshirt freshman and hoped that he had what it took to lead this team. We don't really have that problem any longer with GG, which is why it's easy for the new McCoy to shirt.

Wood... eh. I imagine the coaches would want him as the primary backup with Colt gone, but I wouldn't rule out Chiles taking the secondary snaps there in 2010. We'll have to see some serious progression with Gilbert in charge of the offense.

gg will not redshirt now like i knew he wouldn't. i see both mccoy and wood both redshirting. with chiles moving to receiver will this effect how many ships we give to wrs this year?

Amen, coolhorn and Horns11.

This could be a lot of fun. John Chiles could, if he plays football to his capabilities, be an active participant, on the merits, for the Horns' 2009 and 2010 teams. Chiles could help us in a variety of ways -- among other attributes, he is a real competitor who plays physical football (which, combined with his football speed, could create serious problems for both the linebackers and DBs of our opponents).

Just off-hand, I am thinking this news (that Chiles may now play a more active role on the football field for the Horns -- and possibly help both our running and passing games in the process) is not good news for Oklahoma ...

... and might even make a difference vs. the likes of Florida and USC.

We'll find our soon enough.

If they shirt who's going to run the 10 yard minimum offense?

Just imagine Colt Colt Chiles Harris Wood GG in the backfield

He's certainly going to have show me quite a bit more to even get put in the same sentence as Quan. Let's hope he can.

(1) There is no comparison between John Chiles and Percy Harvin.
(2) Shipley, Collins, Buckner, Williams, Kirkendoll and Hales mean that Chiles is buried in least at third place on the depth chart.

I keep hearing about players and recruits being compared to Percy Harvin. There aren't many of those guys around. Last year, who in NCAA was comparable to Percy Harvin? Not many. Prior to that? Maybe Ted Ginn and Reggie Bush. Perhaps Sproles? The point is that those type of guys aren't too common.

There is a difference between saying - I wonder if we can use player X in a Percy Harvin role and saying - player X is like Percy Harvin.

Agree with Uninformed that not many guys are going to be like PH, but I think its ok to ask if a player may be used in certain plays or formations like pH was used. I think you can say that without assuming that player will have the same results.

The of the Q package is great news. I can't think of any great plays that it made.

However you can still imagine that Chiles being on the field could lend itself to reverses, WR screen pass, double reverse pass, etc.

As far as recruiting, you have to think that GG comes in and plays this year. There just isn't anybody behing Colt and we don't want Colt in late in games where he doesn't need to be.

In 2010 when Colt graduates you will have GG and then nobody behind him. So yes you have to think that one of Chase or Connor will play as a true frosh. I would go with Connor b/c physicially he is more ready to play shape. But who knows, that is a year and a half away.

Of course Harris could play some this year but man he has been injured since his senior year in HS and hasn't done anything on the field during a game yet. I can't put him into the mix until he proves otherwise.

Chiles can be a contributor without having to be a Percy Harvin clone. Harvin-quality players don't grow on trees, but the teams that win consistently do so in part because of contributions from mid-level players. Chiles has enough talent and speed that he needs to be on the field, and if receiver is his best shot at playing time, then he was smart to make the move.

Comparing Chiles to Quan is equally discouraging. Quan is exactly the rare player Colt needed to make our offense special. Ultra competive, glue fingered, uncanny strength for his size, quick and ellusive 1st step, completely unselfish, precise routes regardless of coverage, great downfield blocker, great teammate... I'm sure I missed something. I'm also sure we're gonna miss him more than we can imagine. Those 3rd &5's when Colt would throw a perfectly placed 6 yd pass in tight coverage to move the chains. Very rare a receiver is ALWAYS in that exact spot and ALWAYS catches that ball over the middle squeezed between lb and cb knowing whats coming. 1st time Chiles (or whoever) has that ball bounce off hands and pick 6'd on us we'll be back in reality. Quan seemed to ALWAYS make the 1st guy miss on the little bubble screen and turn what looked like a 1 yd gain into 6-7. Kickoff returns & punt returns he just consistently seemed to get a few more yds than there was to get. I hope Chiles can learn the nuances of wr and be productive if not explosive but can't allow myself to dream he will fill those roles. We're gonna need a consistant ground game and effective deep threats to duplicate last yrs offensive success.

It seemed like the Q package was unsuccessful because when Chiles was on the field the D was keying on him. He was probably more effective in the Q package as a decoy than as a receiver as a result. When he's routinely in games in the future as a WR it should make it easier for him to be effective since the D won't be able to key on him to the same degree.

I dont see it from JC much as a WR or a QB at this level. I saw him at Mansfield Summitt in high school a couple of times and he just was not the huge player that everyone thinks he is here. sure, he is a good player, but dont ever expect anything outrageous from this guy at either position or you will be vastly disappointed.

When he played here in Mansfield, he just never seemed to have "it." I always wanted him to take over games like Vince did, but maybe I was also expecting too much. He is good, just not special...
