Earthlink v. Roadrunner

Anybody switched over from RoadRunner to Earthlink's cable modem service here in Austin? I know they're pretty much the same thing, but I'd be curious to see if anybody's using them and what they think. I'd be interested also if anybody's got a router or wireless access point hooked up to Earthlink.

I can only speak from the technical side of the network, but you should not see any difference in performance. The only differences are on the business side (price, customer service), and not sure, but Earthlink had been considering the option of you buying your own cable modem, or having static IPs for home accounts.

Just curious why anyone would switch ... Earthlink's customer service is horrid compared to Road Runner, so if there's not a price difference of significance, why change.

I switched.

Earthlink has a webmail portal so I can send and receive mail from my own account when I'm on the road, in the office, or otherwise away from home. Roadrunner unbelievably has no plans to add anything like this. I was tired of using Yahoo.

Earthlink also gives you free unlimited dial-up with your account, so when the cable goes out I can still get on or I can also get on with a dial-up connection when I'm out of town.

Those were my two big reasons. Regarding customer service, well, Time Warner Austin has never bowled me over in that regard so I figure that's a wash. Earthlink has a pretty good online support system, and I've set up a few accounts with Earthlink for family members over the last couple years and I've had good results with their customer support.

I guess it's been a little over 2 months now and I haven't had any reason to wish I hadn't switched.

Thanks for the replies.

As far as reasons for switching, mostly because Time Warner sucks ***. They can't manage to get my digital cable to work properly after over a year, three converters and several tech visits, so I'm dumping RR for Earthlink since you don't have to have cable to get the service, then I can get DirecTV.

Vacant,

Thanks for those notes. My question was more rhetorical than sarcastic, so that's good info. I completely forgot the dialup reason (TW has talked with GRIC and iPASS about dialup for a while, but never have gotten around to it).

As for the e-mail while away, I've had no problems getting it when travelling (there's a couple of backdoor ways of doing it), but was still a pain.

As for customer service, I'm only referring to independent measurements and surveys. Earthlink has never been good at customer service, and Road Runner has been consistently good. However, doesn't mean the reverse couldn't be true for individuals.

Regardless, those two reasons are quite good for switching to Earthlink. Hmmmmm....

On customer service, I've found Roadrunner to be consistently good and helpful, which I was leery of as Time Warner Cable is so atrocious. I was pleasantly surprised.

Well, locally and nationally, there's a different set of managers and VPs running Road Runner ... those guys try and make sure the customer service is better than the cable TV crap.

c-lo, great post. I had been wondering about Earthlink. I too HATE Time Warner and that is why I never got RR. Now that I can have faster internet and not deal w/ Time Warner, I am there. One of my great days is when I told TW to piss off while watching my new Dish TV. I have not looked back since.

Loopy,

It's kind of a strange setup, you still get the bill from TWC, and I imagine you have to deal with them at some point. But anything I can do to keep more money OUT of their pockets is fine by me...

Are RR and Earthlink significantly better than SBC's DSL.

I currently have a cable modem connection thru Comcast in Philly and I'm moving to Austin. Trying to do my research.

Thanks for your help

Actually, Vacant is wrong - RoadRunner does have remote access. You "only" get 10 hours free per month, but that should be adequate for most people (additional time is 99 cents per hour).

"Welcome to Road Runner Dial Access - the best way to stay online and in-touch when you are on the road! No more need for a separate Dial-up ISP! Local access numbers nationwide! Get your Road Runner email and YOUR RR while you are away from home!"

"Road Runner Dial Access is free through December 31, 2002. After this introductory offer is over, the first 10 hours per month are free (additional hours are $0.99/hr)."

Earthlink dial-up customer service was horrid
. RoadRunner CS has been really good, although TW cable CS still sucks.
