my trusty sonys crapped out on me after many years of loyal service. going back to the crappy apple earbuds for my ipods is not an option. so, I'm in the market for premium pieces. anyone have personal experience with either, or both, of these brands?

I have them narrowed down to the shure e4c and the etymotics er4.

I was looking around for a good set of audophile in-ear phones, and there were some really good reviews on ipodlounge.com, plus some user reviews in the forums. I would check that out.

That Apple ear buds really, really suck.

I just bought me a pear of these (literally an hour ago):The Link

Not quite in the same league as what you are talking about- but, for a cheap pair with decent performance that you don't have to worry about destroying or losing- check out the Sony MDR-EX71SL. I have a pair that I use when I'm outside- or leave in my travel bag as backups. Good preformace for the $'s- though the cord is kinda funky.

I use a pair of ER-6's as my workout headphones. They're pretty good, but only if you can stand things shoved fairly deeply into your ear canal... Ipod didn't do a good job of driving them, so I'd say go with the ER-4p, not the ER-4s if you buy the etys.

I've tried Shures (E-3's), but didn't like them as much. More bass, but less highs. They were a bit more comfortable though.

It just depends on what you like more. Etys are more detailed, with better highs, but are somewhat hard to listen to for long periods of time and go deeper in the ear. Shures are more laid back and bassy.

I have the Shure's and teh apple in-ears. The apple in-ears suck ***. No bass whatsoever. The Shure's are wonderful, albeit they can get a bit uncomfortable on a long flight.

this is great. just what I was looking for.

now -- does anyone know where I can buy these online for the best price?

Cheapest. But used. Meaning, you might have to wait until what you want pops up, but ER-4's go on sale a lot. But, they're good prices from people who swap out headphones way too often.

New stuff. Not the cheapest I've found, but very competitive prices.

Pretty good site here

Do a search for the product you want, enter the Zip Code for where you'll have them shipped and it will give you all the best prices advertised on the interweb. Be sure to pay attention the site ratings because even though you may get the best price, you may not get the best/fastest service.
