Didn't see anyone discuss this, but Jerry Scarbrough of TrueOrange reported on Monday that Earnesia has informed the coaching staff that she will indeed use her final eligibility next season and remain part of the squad.

Haven't seen it in any other media outlet, so can't say with 100% confidence that this is the case, but if so, our 2009-10 roster is now up to 10 players.

that's awesome news! i sure hope it's true.

Wow. I heard yesterday, from what is usually a pretty good source, that she would not be back....Hope what I heard is wrong. Earnie is always a joy to watch on the court.

Hmmm.....

Maybe Coach G changed her mind.....last I heard, that last year was not being offered to her......that was way early in the year.

BUT, considering what a WARRIOR she was at the end of the season, I can see that Texas realized they would lose an fighter, a rebounder, scorer and just a great Longhorn........and they changed their minds....smart, Coach G, very smart!!

What I had heard, again from a normally pretty good source, was that the story about Earnie not being offered that last year was never true. But, it isn't like I heard anything first hand. So, who knows. I just hope it works out to be best for Earnie to play again, because that obviously works for me.

Well, my source was a VERY close source....like DNA close....

BUT, as I said, that was 'many moons' ago, and things have changed....

I am really glad they have, hope the story is true.....wonder if Bone's pass had anything to do with it....????

I'm confused. How could they not offer her her last year of eligibility? I thought a scholarship was a binding contract. If she had a year left because of a redshirt, how could they tell her she couldn't use it? It may be a naive question, but could someone fill me in?

I was wondering the same thing. Is a team obligated to allow a player to play a 5th year or can they say thanks but no thanks?

I cannot imagine that Earnie would not be welcomed back, especially considering that we have scholarships to offer, could be short handed, and most of all, the way she played at the end of the season. If she can bring back that same sense of urgency that she was playing with it can only benefit the team.

obviously a topic to be debated. the two most important factors are:

1) if Earnie truly wants to return.....can she NOT be allowed to do so?? seems silly to be able to deny her that.

2) if Earnie was told she "wouldn't be allowed to use her redshirt year", why would she WANT to?
why would any athlete of her caliber want to return to a team and coaching staff that didn't want her???

If Earnie returns, her heart wants to be at TX for another year and the coaching staff wants her here. PERIOD.

Well, I recall hearing in several sports that scholarships are reviewed on a yearly basis. To me, that means a player must do what is asked of them to keep their scholarship each year.

That being said, a coaching staff needs to be able to recruit for the following season with an understanding of how many scholarships they will have to award to the next class of recruits. Coach G doesn't typically have a full roster of 15 scholarship players, but if she did, she probably would have asked EW last Summer/Fall what her plans were so that they wouldn't be over the limt with scholarship players . . .

IF Earnie had to let the coaching staff know what her plans were last summer/fall....does that mean she can't change her mind?

I understand that there needs to be room for recruiting, but, when a recruit falls through the cracks and we have plenty of scholarships left, there should definitely be room for a redshirt like EARNIE!!!!!!

My understanding is that the red-shirt year is an "optional" thing.....for both Coaches and Players.....
esp. since she will graduate this May.....

I am thinking she will do like Jamie Carey did, go to graduate school, and play another year.....

I just think she changed everyone's mind when she went from 'OK-good' to 'freakin' awesome' in the last few months of this year's campaign.......

If what Jerry Scarborough states in his newsletter is true, it seems odd that a formal annoucement has not been made, e.g. Dexter's Pitttman's announcement reported on TexasSports.com and in the Statesman that he will stay his senior year.

I hope it is true that Earnesia will return since depth will be an issue next season. However, I too have heard from an extremely reliable source that she was to forgo her 5th year. Perhaps things changed.

OK - I'm going against the grain but one or two great games at the end of the season and now she's this fabulous player!?!?

Help me - what am I missing?

Coach G - find you a go to player on the JUCO level that is a baller/scorer/playmaker/slaher/nose for the ball on a consistent basis. That's what this team needs.

I agree...I see no reason that we would not want Earnie back next year. She was our best player in the Big 12 and NCAA games. I would say that if she says that she wants to come back that she will be back. She has now played in the GG system for a couple of years and should only get better next year.

My understanding was not one that she was 'not being offered the opportunity' to return but rather that there was an implication that she and Carla would not be used in a significant capacity next season...in other words, thanks but no thanks on that last year.

I had always hoped what I heard was not an accurate portrayal, as I felt both players fill integral roles on this team, with Earnie rarely leaving a game without having "left it all on the court."

Dexter's deal was slightly different simply because of the draft implications and the potential problems that media feeding frenzies can create in a case where a player might be a first-round or other high-profile pick. Sadly, that sort of thing rarely happens with what is left of the WNBA, and as a result, negates the reason for a large-scale press conference.

All of that being said...damn I hope this is an accurate report and that we get to see double-zero back on the court next year (and in a vehicle with the wheels in firm contact with the pavement in the interim period).

My question is not about Earnie specifically, but about a "red shirt"/5th year deal. Does the player receive a scholarship during the red shirt year? And if so, does the player also receive a scholarship for the 5th year if she comes back? I am just curious about the rules -

If coaches can decide that someone cannot use their extra year of eligibility because they can't jump high enough or run fast enough anymore, or maybe because they just aren't as good a player as the coach thought they would be, then I am truly appalled. Players such as Earnie got that fifth year of eligibility because they sacrificed their body for the team. Injuries such as ACL's are often life changing, causing pain and health issues for many years to come. It would be outrageous if a coach can tell someone that they can't come back for a fourth year of playing, even though the NCAA says they can. Someone made the point above -- why would you put forth any effort for a coach you know doesn't think enough of you to even want you on the team the next year? Let's see, if this is how it works, maybe the coaches should take this opportunity to get rid of Erika, too. I'm going to choose not to believe it works like this unless explicitly proven otherwise.

Folks, emotions do not enter into the decisions. I seem to remember that basketball and football scholarships are for four (4) separate one year periods. This gives both coaches and students opportunities to make decisions for the future, A player who was injured and has eligibility does not get an automatic additional year.

The preceding was dredged up from my brain from about 25 years ago so there must be space for considerable adjustments.
