early enrollment question

it just hit me, that with the rise of athletes enrolling early, and for me the first one I heard of was Stafford enrolling in January, I started thinking about why more colleges don't just encourage their football recruits to just come on in and enroll in the summer?

Even if your HS graduation is later than the start of Summer I, why not just have everyone come in at the start of Summer II, that way the players can take one, maybe two courses, and get adjusted to the routine.

The players could also lift weights on their own of course. I realize that there are deadlines of when you can actually start practicing with the team.

The vast majority of recruits do enroll for both summer sessions and work out with the team all summer long. Hell I remember a couple years ago when Tray Allen couldn't enroll at semester because SGP had trimesters (i think), but moved to Austin as soon as he graduated after the second trimester.

I saw him leaving the workout facility with a couple other players (I don't remember who) when I was on campus in mid march of '07.

It's rare that a recruit DOESN'T enroll in the summer. In fact, that's usually one of the telltale signs something isn't working out right with that kid. It's just that we don't hear much about it because it's so commonplace and there are no organized practices.

So why is it always a big deal when the freshman report in August? The local news is always there showing the guys moving into the dorms and all that, and Mack talks to the media.

The local news might not be the greatest source here. Here's an article from Mack's site on June 1st showing the freshman moving in.The Link

Mack always has his beginning of the season press conference to talk about the upcoming season just prior to the start of fall practice, but that has everything to do with practice starting and nothing to do with players moving in.
