Early enrollees

Who are going to be the early enrollees from the 2010 class?

Usually the early enrollees have a great shot at playing time compared to the other true frosh coming in. Last year however that didn't seem to be the case due the team being so deep at most positions. I do think though that the early enrollees from 09 helped themselves to chances at more playing time and reps for the 2010 season.

Here were the early enrollees from 09:
Tariq Allen....redshirted
Thomas Ashcraft.....redshirted
Marcus Davis....played special teams and 3rd string(now off the team)
Kyle Kriegel....redshirted
Alex Okafor....2nd string DE
Mason Walters....backup OG...injured early in season

So:

Reggie Wilson...maybe
Connor Wood
Adrian White

Hmm, I am betting we get more. That seems like a low # compared to how many normally enroll early. Seems the Texas HS curriculum lends itself to easier early graduation and thus more early enrollees than some other states.

Classes do not start until the 19th, and I think you have 3-5 days to add/drop, so no, they would not have to be enrolled already.

I am sure if Hicks decided on the 20th to come to Texas the athletic department could get him into English 301, Math 405G, etc., if they really needed to.

There is a link to the student, faculty, and staff directory on the school's homepage. But not seeing a name there doesn't necessarily mean someone isn't enrolled. You can request to have your information removed from the public directory, and some athletes do. Also, as stated above, classes don't start until next week and the final day to enroll is Jan. 22, so some of them won't show up until after then anyway.

I read where the Alabama players had to enroll for Spring before they could go to the bowl game, because it was so late in January. I assumed Texas might be similar.

So Mack's site will probably tell when the first guys arrive.

Does anyone know is any of our early enrollees practiced with the team during pre-bowl workouts?

I believe the early enrollees are just like the regular freshmen, who come in and practice during the summer...before they have started classes. If they have graduated and there are sanctioned team workouts going on, they are approved to participate in them. Obviously they are not allowed to travel with the team or suit up to play.

Pretty sure the kids in summer work outs are enrolled in classes. Madden oversees their training, but the drills are not controlled or watched by the coaches. Your benefits can't start until yo are officially a student.

I'm not talking about the off time...I'm talking about when the team begins regular season workouts...which is before classes begin. Incoming freshmen do not have to wait for classes to begin, to participate.

Nope, Tex is not around any longer. Registration is just about as dead as dead can be now. I remember when it was busy and you could get on the phones on campus for direct lines. Then you could go at it from home in your window of opportunity. But nope, no more Tex.

Well, back in my day Sonny...

But seriously, we stood in line out in front of Gregory Gym, and my first semester I wait FOREVER and when I get to the front I am asked where my Medical Form is. I present them my letter from my doctor saying i"m in tip-top shape (but, of course!). And they go..."No, he was supposed to have completed blue Medical Form XYZ...You need to go to the Health Science Center."

Thus...a long walk across a campus I knew very little about and then back again to stand in line again. Thought seriously about heading home instead.

Yep, I remember the Greory Gym very well. My favorite memory was waiting all day to pull my class cards and arriving at the last table to learn that the class had been closed. I asked what that meant since I could clearly see threre were class cards left in that slot. I was told that the class had been closed so that students who registered on the next day could have a chance to get this class. I explained that I had to have that class to graduate and was told that I needed to talk to the professor. That started a two day search until I found the right professor who would approve my attendance in the class. What a mess; I wonder if the students of today appreciate the computerized registration process that they get to utilize......

I remember before they had wait lists. I had to keep refreshing the registration page during open add-drops to check if someone had dropped in the 20 seconds between the previous refresh. Times were tough back then.

Ok, it's been 30+ years, so I am going to come clean. In my days, we registered at the Drum. You filled out computer add/drop forms and filled in the bubbles to be read by the computer. If a class was full, you could wait around the table to see if anyone turned in a drop form and dropped the class. The forms would be taken later and run through the computer. Rather than waiting, we would get a friend to fill out a bogus drop form. They would put their name as "Joe Smith" and would make up a bogus SS#, etc. They would then come to the table and turn it in, at which time the person working the table would accept my add form. The first day of class there always seemed to be more students than desks, but it worked out.

I did Gregory and then did the Drum when I returned to school to finish my degree in the 80s.

A few interesting charges the Univer$ity laid on me as a student:

Special Union Fee: Fee paid in addition to the usual Union Fee because they were remodeling. The catch: THE UNION WAS UNAVAILABLE BECAUSE THEY WERE REMODELING IT!

Registration Late Fee. I think in 1986, the University declared pre-registration to be regular registration and regular registration (done in the days before the semester started) to be Late Registration. So I got to pay a late fine.

That was the only semester they did that, I believe.

In the mid 70s, the Absurdist student government candidates Jay Atkins and Skip Slyfield proposed sandblasting "Ye Shall Know the Truth..." off of the Main Building and replacing it with "Money Talks."

No ****.

Roma: Awesome! I think of those guys all the time. I had forgotten their names, but they ran on the Arts and Sausages ticket and won. Turk Pipkin was hanging around the Drag at that time and helped them out on their campaign, doing mime stuff at their rallies. I was a little disillusioned one day a few months after the election when I saw them walking out of the main building (under the "Ye shal know.." sign) wearing coats and ties, obviously having attended a meeting with administration.
