Early commits vs. wait and see???

I totally acknowledge the success that Mack has had with
his early recruiting. However, many young men really blossom in their senior year, so I wonder why Mack gets
so many so early when he could cherry pick, say, ten and
then wait to see who really "goes off" in the fall. There must
be scores of studs who would love to come to UT and would
accept that if they excel during their senior season that an
offer could be forhcoming. I have to believe that we lose out
on some great guys who go elsewhere simply because we
are out of scholarships when they come into their own.
Your thoughts?????

The top of the board didn't change much last year. Not sure about others. After losing out on 3 of the top recruits last year, I'm sure Mack is getting his work done. Also, it's nice for the staff to be able to focus almost solely on the season in the fall in lieu of recruiting. I'd like to see a D tackle or 2, but this class is shaping up nicely.

Maybe if Mack simply relied on video to decide who to offer then yes, but most of the time he gets the input from high school coaches on whether or not the kid is Texas worthy. They have usually seen the kid every week day for three years during football season.

Think he could be more patient but not because of kids blowing up during their senior season. Go OOS some more then fall back on some of these three star guys.

Definitely can understand Macks philiosophy however. Hes worked really hard to establish ins with Texas HS coaches and keep in their good graces. Texas is a very talent rich state obviously. Wish we could cherry pick 2-3 OOSers every year but whatever.

Mack's got a good system getting verbals early. He "gets the hay in the barn, so-to-speak", which frees the coaches during the season to keep an eye on next year's potential recruits. Does Texas miss on an occasional late bloomer? Yep...but there's usually a 'ship or two around for someone who comes on in his senior year and likes Texas. Doesn't happen much though, because by the time Mack offers, Texas has close to two years of a good read on the player.

I guess this is just a long way around of saying a coach goes with what he's comfortable with. Mack likes to bag recruits early, and given that very few back out of their verbals to Texas, early recruiting works real well around here.

I think Mack does great as is
