Earl Thomas Blake Gideon...

Anyone care to comment on why the coaches seem so high on these young men.

I haven't seen them play, but I'm not sure anyone else on the D has garnered more praise thus far from the ones who count.

I looked up Earl T's rivals ranking and he was the 12 rated "athlete" prospect in 2007.

He and Gideon (I think he was 2 or 3 "stars") in the same secondary starting would be hilarious as far as the "star" rating system goes.

Any chance these guys will end up as starters for us this year? Sounds like a foregone conclusion that both will play considerably.

Brian Robison and Mike Huff were hilarious, too.

It happens from time to time. The most annoying thing that could happen would be for one of those guys to be average but not great. Then all you would hear would be snide comments that Mack & Co don't play the best players. ****, maybe thats even true every once in awhile, but I like to think it's because of injuries and player problems with consistency. I lose less sleep that way.

Blake Gideon just gets it. He is always been in the right place at the right time. Kid knows how to play football. I think you will be talking about him well after he leaves the University of Texas.

Unless something crazy happens, Thomas will start at one of the Safety spots. I don't know if Gideon will start, but it looks like he will see time at the other Safety spot (along with Wells and Scott).

I wish I knew more about them but I can say this about Gideon, he seemed to play every position and do everything in high school on a Leander team that ain't no joke. He probably did not get too many stars because he played multiple positions and was not a specialist at safety. This is about the dumbest reason not to rank someone in high school. Leander was a power house and if he was good enough to see multiple spots on the field then he probably just 'gets it'. 300 tackles in three years and 10 ints and 6 fumbles he gets something!!!

I think he will be a hell of a safety, especially if he has put some weight on and I think this kid will be special.

I know even less about Thomas, but I do like seeing track and field on his resume. 4x200 and long jump... hmmm sounds like he is fast and can jump. I like that in a corner back.

Hope these two can see some serious PT this year, and with the high flying offenses we will see this year, we will need it.

Check out Gideon's bio. Sounds like the kid did it all in high school. His sports hero is Major Applewhite and when asked why he chose Texas, his repsone was simply "I want to go where the best go."

Allsome!

Gideon was certainly the beneficiary of being the only safety who stayed healthy the entire spring. He played both first and second team in the spring game, and probably got more reps than anyone, Thomas was probably 2nd. It looks like he plays smart and is always in position. I guess we'll have to wait and see what kind of playmaker he is at this level. Hopefully he doesn't become the Scott Derry of the secondary.

Thomas has unusually quick hips, and can turn while retaining his balance as few can (low center of gravity), yet he has good size and speed. As a CB/S he has become the guy the team relies on to cover the slot receiver, although they do move Palmer in occasionally. As with Gideon I'm not sure yet what we'll see come game time, but he is doing all the right things in practice.

QFE? They were both 3 star guys. They were also NFL draft picks to say the least. The star system is not infallible is all I was trying to say, and I really don't think that even the guys handing out stars would disagree with that.

Anyway, who gives a crap. I hope Thomas and Gideon are as good as advertised -- we'll need them to be with the offenses we'll face for the rest of their time on campus.

QFE="quoted for emphasis"

In other words, I was stating in shorthand that "I would like to draw everyone's attention to this previously stated point, not only because I find it apropos, but also because I concur so vehemently that I wish to iterate its inescapable veracity."

I was trying to depart from my normal, boorish, sesquipedalianism.

Gideon is actually pretty fast. At the very least, I thought he looked much quicker in his high school clips than Nolan Brewster, who was rated as a 4 star.

That's not to say Gideon should have been 5 star, because I think Brewster was probably overrated, but I do think Gideon was a solid recruit who was pretty severely underrated.

I went to school with Gideon and had classes with him. Hes very focused. The kid was a stud on the team. Was playing Varsity his freshman year.

From what ive heard as he left school early to practice more with the horns, hes gotten alot bigger and his speed is up to par. I remember him being the fastest kid on our team. Coach Gideon at Leander(his Father), would put him in at QB and just run options and sneaks all day.

Im stoked that they recruited him

Leander is known for having plenty of speed on their team and Gideon was the fastest player on the team. He's got ALOT of straight line speed. And he was by far the smartest defensive player i've ever seen. If some of you are forgetting, against Pflugerville (state finalists) in the regular season he finished the game with 99 yards rushing and 1 td, an int, a forced fumble, and fumble recovered, and a blocked extra point (which proved to be the difference in the game as Leander won 37-36)

I am a pville grad and was pissed watching that game. He had ran the same play all night. I knew what he was going to do when he came in at qb! I was really mad that the coaches scouted these guys and still let him take it around the corner!!!

Glad to get that out..Anyway he ran away from the whole team so I know he has enough speed to play that safety spot. John Lynch anyone?

This may seem like a silly question, but is Earl Thomas a safety or a cornerback? Craig Way referred to him as a cornerback the other day, which surprised me, because I thought he had been playing safety in practice. Someone else on this thread referred to him as a corner, and then another poster called him a "CB/S".

So what is he?

no offense, hornpharm, but what didn't you understand? that's how it is right now, but it's susceptible to change and i wouldn't be at all surprised if ishie works his back to a starting role when he gets 100% healthy. and i'm not sure i understand your depth chart you listed there, why do you include CBs? i thought we were discussing safeties here

also, earl thomas has been working a lot as a slot CB in the nickel package this week. still very early, but interesting still

Ishie does not appear to be listed as a starter by any of the coaches in the limited interviews since practice started. Thus your depth chart for safety is incorrect. hornpharmd's is probably more accurate.

ACuriae, I've used your sig to describe my Volunteer Fire Department meetings.

I think Earl and Blake are our next Huff and Michael Griffin.

It's gonna be all right.
