DVD's in HD

Did they just skip 780p and 1080i and just go straight to 1080p? If so, why?

I imagine it would've been easier to make them in 780p first to go along with most HDTV's the past few years.

Or did I just miss out on some technology?

They skipped 720p/1080i, for a couple of reasons.

1. Normal DVDs upconvert reasonably well to 720p.
2. "Full HD" was always considered to be 1080p. No reason to develop a whole new type of media that would be obsolete before it even hit store shelves.
3. Format war. If, for example, BluRay was only 720p while HD-DVD was 1080p, the format war would have turned out much differently.

Also, aren't 1080p discs backward-compatible with non-1080p TVs?

I recall that Toshiba's, now failed, HD-DVD had a version that output in 720p and 1080i. They also had a more expensive version that also output in 1080p.
