DVD Ripping/Editing software

I've recently been asked to edit a dvd because it is too long. So I need to rip it to the harddrive, edit it, and then put it back on a dvd. Or, I need to just rip the sections they want, and then put them together on a dvd.

I don't have any clue what software to use, but it better be free. I know somebody here has done this, so I would appreciate some suggestions. Thanks.

you are going to need to change the file into an avi or mpeg in order to edit it. There are some free programs like dvd2avi that can do this, but not sure how user friendly they are. As far as editing, there are some free ones that are fairly crude, but work. I like the Pinnacle Studio software (but it is not free).

visit doom9.org and the forums there are pretty good (or they used to be). They have some guides on how to do different things

I tried Dr. Divx just to see how it worked. I couldn't find the audio. There is an audio folder on the dvd, but it contains no files and there are no audio files anywhere else on the dvd.

So I just told the program the audio was within the video files, and it ripped everything fine but without any audio. The video files are .vob's.

I do 1-2 DVD's per month of old and current family movies. I use Windows Movie Maker for the editing, etc. I then use TMPG for the burning. Works great.
