DVD Recorders?

I'm thinking of getting one of these around Christmas time. I have a few questions about them. What brands and models are worth looking at, not neccesarily the most expensive ones? I understand that it has an internal hard drive to record x amount of hours. If I have a DirecTivo and record a football game on that, is it easy to transfer it from there to the DVD recorder, or would I want to just record it straight from the satellite to the DVD recorder? Basically, how would I hook up the DVD recorder, Tivo, and TV to get it to work this way? Thanks.

for the price, you may want to check out a dvd burner for your computer. they usually offer more burning options

I have a Panasonic (got it open item for about $240, regularly retails in the mid300s).

If you have a DirecTivo, it would seem that the need for internal harddriveon the DVD recorder would be pretty miniaml.

I also have TiVo, and have little difficulty transferring from my TiVo to a DVD recorder. Quality is generally pretty good. Works essentially the same as a VCR. you can inputi nto the DVD recorder usually via either traditional composite or S-Video (which I use). Some DVD recorders may also have component inputs as well.

You will be more limited in being able to use it for copyrighted mat'l, though (for instance, I wanted to "burn" all my VHS movies I bought onto DVD.... no dice). A DVD burner on a computer may allow more options in terms of "hacks" on doing that... but IMO, doesn't offer the same convenience for other purposes.

get it before the UNT game so you can have the entire season on DVD.... or else buy it direct from UT

I have a Pioneer DVD burner w/ Tivo and I think it blows.

The first football I tried to put on DVD off my Tivo, It asked me to put in disk 1 of 5.

1 of 5? Damn. It must be recording at a greater than required quality. I put the entire 2003 Holiday Bowl game (3 hours and 45 minutes) on one DVD with no loss in quality from the DirecTV broadcast.

I keep hearing bad things about the TiVo/DVDR boxes -- anyone happy with their purchase?

Diamondback,

You have a couple of typical options. You can either purchase a standalone DVD burner that will record from the outputs of your TiVo or you can get a DVD burner for your computer along with a video card that has A/V inputs. The standalone burner would probably be the easiest solution, but the DVD burner on your computer will give you more editing and customization options.

It will burn 30 minutes a disk at Extreme quality, but if you record at lesser quality settings you get longer recording time, but the quality is less than that of VHS.
