This board seems to be in the know on a lot of things so here is my question.

I want to get a Progressive Scan DVD Recorder/ VCR Combo (I have family vids that I want to transfer). I also am getting a TIVO in May when I switch to Satellite TV, so I am hoping there is some sort of transfer option from TIVO to DVD Burner.

I wouldn't worry so much about the +/- format although it's nice to have both. Most new DVD players (few years) and almost all computers should play both formats.

New PC DVD burners can burn dual layered discs which doubles the capacity (commercial DVDs are dual layerd). Not sure if they have that for the stand alone units yet.

I'm in the same boat. The ones with the built in hard drive would be nice, but they are a couple of hundred bucks more. I got a simple RCA combo vcr/dvd recorder. It was important to me to get one that record RW format because as I understand it, you can rerecord over those types of dvd's. Other than that, it record -/+R. Just a tad over $300 at BestBuy. Check out the Toshiba RD-XS32. I found it online at Amazon for $369. Has an 80 gig hard drive and you can burn directly to DVD in pretty much all formats. Does not have the VHS capability (i.e., you can't just insert a VHS and record to a DVD, but it does have the firewire and S-Video connections for that purpose. Sorry I don't have a link, but you can go to Amazon and just go to video recorders and find it pretty easily on there.
