DVD, Receiver, TV Question

Ok...here's the scenario
I just purchased a Sony TV that has HDMI input and I picked up a basic Onkyo HTIB setup. The receiver does not have HDMI input (but everything else you would expect from a relativey modern day receiver).

So if I pick up a DVD player with HDMI output...would it work if the video out on the DVD player goes to the TV (HDMI) and then the sound out from the DVD player goes to the receiver.

Would this work or is this a moot point because the digital cable box (Time Warner) plugs into the HDMI input on the TV? No idea here, first time getting a HD setup.

that should work, but i am not sure if the optical out (what you would feed to the reciever) and the HDMI audio portion will be in sync. My guess is that they would be.

How many HDMI inputs on the TV? any additional DVI inputs?

I guess it pays to read the manual.

HDMI carries both audio and video, so one cable does the trick! The TV has only 1 HDMI input. Hmm, ok...then for those of you with Time Warner...does their digital cable box contain a hdmi output?

The Time Warner HD DVR box (I believe it is SA 8000) has both HDMI and DVI outputs on it. In Houston, the HDMI works for some, and not for others. Doesn't work for me, so I've got mine wired in by component cables.

Before you do your DVD player purchase, DO YOUR HOMEWORK! You want a player that does quality upconversion. Zenith DVB310 is a good player, and I've heard the Denon upconversion model is a good player too. The Samsung HD-841 is a total piece of ****, I'm not sure if the 941 is out yet.

I've got a Samsung DLP with Yamaha receiver and the Zenith DVB310. I run DVI output (no audio) from Zenith to TV, and run sound to the receiver with optical cable. If I set my player to output anything other than 720p, I get a delay in the sound on DVDs. This is from the time it takes to either upconvert or downscale a 1080i or 480p signal to 720p (native resolution on Samsung).

Personally, in my experience, A/V receivers that handle video are a bit much of overkill (and uber $$), so you're not missing anything by not having HDMI input on your receiver.
