Dutch Ovens

OK, I was at Cabella's this weekend and saw a dutch oven. What impressed me the most was the cookbook by the Lone Star Dutch Oven club that was next to it. It made me hungry just reading it.

I have never done any dutch oven cooking. I do camp about once a year, but would like to use this at home. I have a fire pit in the back yard.

Am I crazy to use this at home? I want to make some dutch oven stew

I like campfire cooking and don't want to put this thing in an oven or on a stove where I can use a normal pot. Or should I reconsider?

I built a fire pit in my back yard specifically for Dutch oven cooking. And I bought more ovens. It's a good extension of the art/hobby of cooking. It is pretty challenging and addicting.

I liked some of the recipes enough to start cooking them inside when the weather dictated.

Go for it.

Dutch ovens are really special. And, you can literally make anything in them; entrees-dessert. But not the salad! I was a pro at those things in boy scouts and at the deer lease as a kid.

Tex, you need to post some photos of your backyard rig. I've been very interested in Dutch Oven cooking for some time now & of course, it's always good to practice @ home where youv'e got a frozen pizz for backup if you screw it up.

I'll see what I can do. I am in the process of building a bigger fire pit now.

When I first started, I took an old wooden box that my dad had made for mixing small batches of quik-crete...it was just a 2"x4" frame with a plywood bottom, about 2'x2'. I put about 3" of sand in the bottom of the box, and it was great for cooking in one Dutch oven (and it was portable). That is what I would recommend for anyone who is just starting out and doesn't already have a fire pit.

My dad loved Dutch oven cooking. He passed away in June, and even when he was really, really sick, he talked about going camping just to cook.

My Dad has a dutch oven that we have eaten from when camping/hunting. Good stuff.

My wife is not a fan of the 'dutch oven'.

I bought a 6qt. enameled cast iron dutch oven from Amazon for < $50a couple months ago and its been great. Highly recommended.

Two hours ago, by a strange co-incidence, I was at Callahan's General Store looking at dutch ovens. I want one for baking on my Big Green Egg. The BGE sells their own brand, but I learned Callahan's has a good selection on pre-conditioned iron cookwear at reasonable prices.
They had a five-quart for $39.99, which I am considering.
They also have a whole shelf of dutch oven and campfire cookbooks, and a couple look really good.
