Duncanville (#1 team in state, #3 nationally, 23-0) will play Cedar Hill (#9 in state, 17-5) Friday, January 8, at 6:00 PM. A lot of talent in this game, a few well-known names:
Joyner Holmes
Ciera Johnson
Zarielle Green

This will be Cedar Hill's second opponent in as many weeks ranked in the Top 4 nationally - they lost 67-62 to #4 Riverdale Baptist in the Boo Williams Christmas tournament.

Duncanville up 35-24 at half. Joyner only played 6 minutes in the first half due to foul trouble.

It was a pretty good battle till D'Ville went on a 20 to 6 run in the last 4 minutes. That sealed C. Hill fate.
70-48 D'Ville

Have you seen Cedar Hill play often? I ask because, in the first quarter, Joyner half-jogged and she wouldn't get to the other end of the floor until well after her teammates had already taken their positions in their half court offense/defense. Is the CH coach trying to maximize her minutes?

That being said, this is the first time I've seen her live and she is definitely the most impressive combination of length, athleticism and explosiveness I've seen. She was really pressing in the second half but still showed a good midrange shot from the elbow and can really handle the ball. Aside from her foul trouble that limited her minutes, the most disappointing thing was the behavior of a number of Duncanville fans. You wouldn't think followers of a team with such a winning history would act that poorly.

The Cedar Hill coach does not know what she is doing. She has done nothing to maximize Joyner's talents on the offensive end, and to be quite honest, Joyner does not have a very good supporting cast. I was at the game as well and 2 of us in the DFW area have seen Joyner play on numerous occasions. She looks bored plus Duncanville has way more talent all around than Cedar Hill. If you really want to see Joyner play up to her potential, go watch her in AAU. She is THE most talented player in her class, with explosive athleticism, speed and size. She is the real deal!!!!!

Thanks for the info.
I was very impressed by Duncanville's Zarielle Green, quick as a cat, very good ball handler and a nice shot from distance. Nice height for a sophomore PG.

Joyner is as advertised and even if she was used to maximum ability this team would not have won. However, with a better supporting cast, they could possibly beat D'Ville. There are not many teams if any that can beat D'Ville. Duncanville is just too much for anyone right now.

She is a dynamic player and has been since playing in the church league on the south side of Dallas.

Duncanville is generally too much for anyone. That's why they have won so much and it starts with coaching. Cathy Self-Morgan is an outstanding coach on the high school level. Her teams are always prepared and play well together. Duncanville is WAY more talented than Cedar Hill. Joyner is a superstar and will do incredible things at UT!!!!!

Heard that Joyner had 12 points early, but that the officiating was poor and she sat for most of the first half. I wish I could see some games in the DFW area.

Duncanville is so fun to watch. The talent working as a team. This may be the 3rd best team behind 2012 (41-1) and 2013 (42-0). And you right Coach Self-Morgan is a phenomenal teacher and coach.

I think she only had 2 or 4 points when she sat late in the first quarter. 12 points sounds about right in the second half. Of the 3 fouls in the first quarter that benched her for the rest of the half, I had a good angle on a non-existent blocking call on the baseline. From my vantage point, Joyner never touched the girl because Joyner was already mid-flop before the shooter got within 2 feet of her - Manu Ginobili would've been proud. The bad calls went both ways though.

What was the issue with the Duncanville fans? Surprised to hear there were problems given the type of program Coach Self-Morgan runs.

I have seen this phenomenon happen with high school volleyball. You get a fabulous player (like my niece, who was 2 time all state) surrounded by average high school talent and a coach who belongs in the high school ranks (at best), and she doesn't look all that impressive every night. But put her in elite AAU ball with teammates who can play and pass the ball and all of a sudden you're blown away with the skill set she displays.

It wasn't the majority - that's why I said a number of fans. I was on the Duncanville side and there was a small group behind the CH bench that spent more time yelling at the Longhorns rather than cheering on the Pantherettes. The most egregious example was at the end of the 3rd quarter. Time was running out and Joyner took a desperation 3 and it was blocked. Most of their fans simply cheered but this group was pointedly yelling at the CH players as they walked back to the bench and during their huddle.

Always a few knuckleheads that stand out but it's been a while since I've been in the stands at a girls' high school basketball game so I can't say if this is the new norm. The Duncanville fans in my immediate area were very respectful and even acknowledged when a CH player made a good play/move - basically Joyner or #10 (SG - don't know her name). I actually chuckled a bit when one of them said,"That girl shouldn't be able to do that" when Joyner crossed-over her defender at the FT line and blew by her for a basket. By the tone, it was more in awe of the move rather than an indictment of the defender.
